Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
Buckram and lining; 2 snap fasteners.

GAUGE: 1 shell makes 1 inch; 2 rows 1¼ inches.

SIDE (Make 2) … Starting at lower edge, ch 88 to measure 16 inches. 1st row: Tr in 8th ch from hook (turning chain) and in next 2 ch; now, drawing up the loop of each tr to measure ½ inch and working over the 3 tr just made into the turning chain, make tr in the 3rd ch from base of first tr made, then tr in 2nd ch, then tr in the first ch (cross shell made); * skip next 4 ch on starting chain, tr in next 3 ch, now, working over last 3 tr made, skip first ch of the skipped ch-4, make tr as before in next 3 ch (another cross shell made). Repeat from * across, ending with tr in same place as 3rd tr of cross shell was made (12 cross shells). Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: * Skip first 3 tr of cross shell, tr in next 3 tr, working as before make tr in the first, then the 2nd and then the 3rd skipped tr. Repeat from * across, ending with tr in top of turning chain. Ch 4, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 12½ inches. Break off.

GUSSET and HANDLE … Starting at Gusset seam, ch 11. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 52 inches. Next row (wrong side): Holding last row and starting chain together and working through both thicknesses, sl st in each st across to join.

TAB … Ch 7 and work as for Gusset until piece measures 2½ inches. Break off.

To Join Gusset and the 2 Sides: With wrong sides together, pin Sides to Gusset, having Gusset seam at bottom of bag. Work a row of sc closely through both thicknesses across the 3 sides of bag, making 3 sc at both corners at bottom of bag.
   Cut 2 pieces of buckram, 12 x 12½ inches (Sides), and 1 piece, 1¾ by 52 inches (Gusset and Handle). Cut 4 pieces of lining, 13 x 13½ inches, and 1 piece, 2¾ x 53 inches (½-inch seams allowed). With right sides together, sew each set of 2 Side lining pieces together, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning. Turn and insert buckram between Side pieces. Sew up opening. With right sides together, sew Gusset seam on lining. Fold seam allowance over the buckram and baste in place. Sew Sides to Gusset. Insert lining in bag. Sew in place. Line Tab and sew to center of one side. Fasten with snap fasteners.
