MATERIALS:

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS PEARL COTTON, size 5, 6 balls each of Yellow, Green and Blue. Different color combinations may be used if desired.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 5.
Two 12-inch ball-end wooden rods.

GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at the top with Blue, ch 125. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (124 sts). Ch 1, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: S c in each st across, ch 1, turn. 4th row: S c in each s c across. Drop Blue, attach Yellow, ch 1, turn. 5th row: With Yellow, work s c in 8 s c, insert hook at base of 9th s c on 1st row, draw loop through, and complete as for an s c (long s c made). * Skip s c behind long s c, make s c in next 11 s c, skip 11 s c on 1st row, make long s c at base of next s c on 1st row. Repeat from * across, ending with 8 s c. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: S c in each st across. Drop Yellow, attach Green, ch 1, turn. 7th row: With Green, work s c in 2 s c, insert hook at base of 3rd s c 4 rows below, and finish as for a long s c, * skip s c behind long s c, make s c in next 11 s c, long s c in next s c 4 rows below. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 s c. Ch 1, turn. 8th and 9th rows: S c in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 10th row: S c in each st across. Drop Green, attach Blue, ch 1, turn. 11th row: With Blue, work s c in 8 s c, make long s c at base of 9th s c 4 rows below, * skip s c behind long s c, s c in next 11 s c, long s c in next s c 4 rows below. Repeat from * across, ending with 8 s c. Ch 1, turn. 12th row: S c in each st across. Drop Blue, attach Yellow, ch 1, turn. 13th, 14th and 15th rows: With Yellow, repeat 7th, 8th and 9th rows. 16th row: S c in each st across. Drop Yel­low, attach Green, ch 1, turn. 17th row: With Green, repeat 11th row. 18th row: S c in each st across. Drop Green, attach Blue, ch 1, turn. 19th, 20th and 21st rows: With Blue, re­peat 7th, 8th and 9th rows. 22nd row: S c in each st across. Drop Blue, attach Yellow, ch 1, turn. 23rd row: With Yellow, repeat 11th row. 24th row: S c in each st across. Drop Yellow, attach Green, ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 18 rows (7th to 24th rows incl.) for pattern, until piece measures 22 inches from the beginning. Fasten off.

HANDLES (Make 2) … Starting at one end, with Blue, ch 13. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in next 11 ch (12 s c). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row, changing colors as fol­lows: Work 4 rows Blue, 2 rows Yel­low, 4 rows Green, 2 rows Blue, 4 rows Yellow, 2 rows Green. Repeat these 18 rows until Handle measures 22 inches. Fasten off.

FINISHING … Fold crocheted piece in half, to measure 11 x 15½ inches, seam side to within 3 inches from top edges. If desired, line bag with lining material. With 3 strands of thread (1 strand of each color), work a row of s c closely together over wooden rods. Gather top edges of bag and sew to ridge of s c-row on rods with over-and-over stitches. Fold Handle pieces in half lengthwise and sew edges together. Sew Handles to bag as in illustration.
