MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 1 ball.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 2.
1½ yards of ribbon 1 inch wide.
Water tumbler.

BOTTOM OF BASKET … Starting at center, ch 6. Join with sl st to form a ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 19 d c in ring. Join to top of ch-3 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 4, (to count as d c and ch 1) * d c in next d c, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd st of ch-4 (20 sps). 3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, d c in same sp as sl st, * (ch 1, d c in next sp) twice; ch 1, d c in same sp. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-1 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-4. 4th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, tr in same sp as sl st, * (ch 1, tr in next sp) 3 times; ch 1, tr in same sp. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-1 with sl st to 4th st of ch-5. 5th rnd: Sl st in next sp, s c in same sp, * ch 3, skip 1 sp, in next sp make d c and 2 tr; then ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook (p made). Make 2 tr and d c in same sp, ch 3, skip 1 sp, s c in next sp. Re­peat from * around, joining last ch-3 with sl st to s c. Fasten off.

SIDES1st rnd: Attach thread to any free sp on 4th rnd of Bottom of Basket. Ch 6, and working around so that right side of work is outside of Basket, work * d c in next free sp, ch 3. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-3 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-6. 2nd rnd: Sl st in next sp. Ch 4, * d c in same sp, ch 1, d c in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-1 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-4. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, d c in same sp, * ch 1, skip 1 sp, in next sp make d c, ch 1 and d c (shell made). Repeat from * around. Join. 4th to 12th rnds incl: Same as 3rd rnd. 13th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, d c in same sp, * ch 2, skip 1 sp, s c in sp of next shell, ch 2, skip 1 sp, make shell in sp of next shell. Repeat from * around. Join. 14th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, d c in same sp, * ch 5, make shell in sp of next shell. Repeat from * around. Join. 15th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, d c in same sp, ch 2, skip 2 ch, s c in next ch, ch 2, make shell in sp of next shell. Repeat from * around. Join. 16th rnd: Same as 14th rnd. 17th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, tr in same sp, * ch 1, in next sp make tr, ch 1 and tr. Repeat from * around. Join.
   18th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd. 19th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, d c in same sp, * ch 2, skip 1 sp, s c in next sp, ch 2, skip 1 sp, in next sp make d c, ch 1 and d c. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-2 to 3rd st of ch-4. 20th rnd: Same as 14th rnd. 21st rnd: Same as 15th rnd. 22nd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, d c in same sp, ch 1, 2 d c in same sp, * ch 5, in sp of next shell make 2 d c, ch 1 and 2 d c. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-5 to top of ch 3. 23rd rnd: Sl st in next d c and in next sp, ch 3, d c in same sp, ch 2, 2 d c in same sp, * ch 3, skip 2 ch, s c in next ch, ch 3, in sp of next shell make 2 d c, ch 2 and 2 d c. Repeat from * around. Join. 24th rnd: Sl st in next d c and in next sp, ch 3, 2 d c in same sp, ch 2, 3 d c in same sp, * ch 7, in sp of next shell make 3 d c, ch 2 and 3 d c. Re­peat from * around. Join. 25th rnd: Sl st in next 2 d c and in next sp, ch 3, 3 tr in same sp, p; then make 3 tr and d c in same sp, * ch 4, skip 3 ch, s c in next ch, ch 4, in sp of next shell make d c, 3 tr, p, 3 tr and d c. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

HANDLE … Starting at one end, ch 10. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook ch 1, d c in same ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch, s c in next ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch, in last ch make d c, ch 1 and d c. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: In ch-1 sp of shell make d c, ch 1 and d c; ch 5, shell in sp of next shell, ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Same as 2nd row. 4th row: In ch-1 sp of shell make d c, ch 1 and d c; ch 2, skip 2 ch, s c in next ch. Ch 2, shell in sp of next shell. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the last 3 rows 17 more times. Fasten off. Sew Handle to Basket.
   Stiffen basket. Run ribbon through handle and make bow at one side. In­sert water tumbler.

NOTE: The 15th row in SIDES appears to have an error. There is an instruction to repeat from * across, but the original * is missing from the original pattern. If someone makes this pattern and figures out where the original * belongs, please let me know!
