Afghan Stitch Chair Set Pattern #7090

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls, White.
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand, 2 skeins of Turkey Red, and 1 skein each of Royal Blue, Dk. Hunter's Green, Orange and Black.
A steel Afghan hook, size C.

When completed, chair back measures about 16 inches wide x 10 inches deep, and each arm rest about 7½ x 10 inches.

Afghan Stitch. Work as follows: Make specified number of chains. 1st row: Skip 1st ch from hook, draw up a loop in each ch across, retaining all loops on hook. This is half a row. For 2nd half, thread over, draw through 1st loop only, * thread over draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * until 1 loop remains on hook. 2nd row: Draw up a loop under perpendicular bar of next st and each st across, retaining all loops on hook. Work loops off as for 2nd half of 1st row. Be sure to have same number of stitches on each row.

Chair Back. Starting at narrow end, make a chain to measure 12½ inches long (thus allowing for shrinkage while working), and work in Afghan stitch until piece measures 16 inches. Finish last row with sl st under each vertical bar across, then sl st down left-hand edge of work. Break off.

Embroidery. With 3 strands of Turkey Red, make a row of cross stitch (each cross stitch to cover one square) all around, 1 inch in from edge. Then make 1 row each of cross stitch, 1 inch apart, inside this row, in the following order: Royal Blue, Dk. Hunter's Green, Orange. Then, with Black, make a row of cross stitch across center (see illustration).

Arm Pieces. Make a chain to measure 9½ inches long and work in Afghan stitch until piece measures 10 inches in all. Finish last row and left-hand edge with sl st as for chair back.

Embroidery. Embroider as for chair back, having center Black row running vertically.
