Slip Cover for Chair Seat Pattern #7099

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 3 balls of Beige, and 1 ball each of French Rose and Maroon.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.

When completed, slip cover measures about 18 inches at front edge, 14 inches at back edge, and 14 inches at both side edges. Side strip measures about 3 inches deep, including edging.

Gauge: 2 loops make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

Chair Seat. Starting at front edge, with Beige make a chain to measure about 21 inches. 1st row: S c in 3rd ch from hook (1 p made), ch 4, s c in 3rd ch from hook (another p made), ch 1, s c in 10th ch of foundation (counting back from 1st p made), ch 4, * make a p, ch 4, make another p, ch 1, skip 4 ch of foundation, s c in next ch, ch 4. Repeat from * until 36 loops have been made (row should measure about 18 inches). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: * Make a p as before, ch 4, make another p, ch 1, s c in next loop between 2 p's of previous row. Ch 4, repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. Hereafter repeat 2nd row until piece measures 14 inches in all, but decreasing at both ends of row after 2½ inches and every 2½ inches thereafter, until 26 loops remain. (To decrease, omit the last loop and sl st in next 2 p's.) Then, on next row, dec. 2 loops at each end of row. Continue straight until piece measures 17½ inches in all. Break off.

Attach thread at edge of right front, * ch 4, sl st in p on next row on right side. Repeat from * around, omitting front edge and making s c between p's on back edge. Break off.

Side Strip. Make a chain to measure about 5 inches long and work as for 1st row of chair seat until 4 loops have been made. Cut off remaining chain. Hereafter continue as for chair seat until strip measures long enough to go around both sides and front of chair seat. Then work a row of ch's along both long sides, as for chair seat. Break off.

Place side edge of chair seat against side edge of strip and, working under ch's of both thicknesses, make a row of s c closely together, allowing a little extra at both front corners of chair seat. Break off.

Edging. Attach Beige at lower edge on side strip, * ch 5, s c in next ch-4 loop. Repeat from * across 3 sides. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * 7 s c in next loop, sl st in next s c. Repeat from * across, turn. 3rd row: * Ch 7, s c in 4th s c of next loop. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: * 4 s c in next loop, ch 3, 4 s c in same loop, sl st in s c between loops. Repeat from * across. Break off. Work edging on back edge to correspond.

Appliqué Motifs. Flower. With French Rose ch 12, join with sl st to form ring. Make 2 s c in ring.

Petals. 1st row: * Ch 12, turn. D c in 3rd ch from hook, d c in each ch across, 2 s c in ring (1 petal made). Repeat from * around until 6 petals in all are made. Join with sl st in 1st s c. Then sl st in next s c, sl st to tip of 1st petal, s c under turning ch-2, ** s c in next d c. * Ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, s c in next d c (1 p made). Repeat from * twice more. Then s c under turning ch-2 of next petal. Repeat from ** around, leaving last petal unconnected. Sl st across to 1st s c on center ring. Break off.

Stem. Attach Maroon in 1st s c and make a chain to measure about 5 inches, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch, s c in each ch across, sl st in 2nd s c on center ring, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across, picking up back loop only. Break off. Ch 8 and make another flower like first, but having only 4 petals (instead of 6); and make another stem like first, but measuring only 2½ inches long (instead of 5). This completes 1 set of appliqué flowers. Make another set like this.
