The Sub-Deb Suit Pattern

SIZE 10 OR 12

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 13 balls of color 68 Skipper Blue and 5 balls of color 70 Blue Jewel (for jacket and skirt) and 3 balls of color 70 Blue Jewel and 1 ball of color 68 Skipper Blue (for blouse). Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3 for jacket and skirt; and 1 and 5 for blouse.

Gauge: Jacket, 8 half d c equal 1 inch; 6 rows equal 1 inch. Blouse, 6 half d c equal 1 inch; 4 rows equal 1 inch.

Jacket

(Worked up and down). Front. (Right side) Ch 115 (this forms center front edge). 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook, and in each st of ch, ch 2, turn. 2nd to 5th rows incl: 1 half d c in each st, ch 2, turn. 6th row: 1 half d c in each of next 66 sts, ch 4 (for a buttonhole), skip 4 sts, 1 half d c in each of next 10 sts, ch 4, skip 4 sts, 1 half d c in each of next 10 sts, ch 4, skip 4 sts, 1 half d c in each of next 15 sts, ch 2, turn. 7th row: 1 half d c in each st, and 2 half d c in last st (an increase to shape neck edge). Ch 2, turn. 8th row: Same as 2nd row. 9th to 16th rows incl: Repeat 7th and 8th rows. The end where increases are made is the neck edge. 17th row: Same as 7th row, ch 3, turn. 18th row: 2 half d c in 3rd st from hook (2 increases), 1 half d c in each st, ch 2, turn. 19th to 29th rows incl: Repeat 17th and 18th rows alter­nately. At 22nd row make 3 buttonholes to corre­spond with those of 6th row. 30th to 57th rows incl: To shape armhole decrease 2 sts each row at armhole edge. Make left side of front the same as right omitting buttonholes.

Back. Ch 83 (this forms side seam). 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook and in each st of ch. In last st make 3 half d c. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Same as 18th row of front. 3rd to 28th rows incl: 1 half d c in each st, make 2 increases each row at one edge only to shape armhole. 29th to 56th rows incl: 1 half d c in each st, ch 2, turn. 57th to 84th rows incl: Same as 30th to 57th rows of right front.

Sleeves. Ch 21. 1st row: 2 half d c in 3rd ch from hook and 1 half d c in each st of ch, ch 2, turn. 2nd row: 1 half d c in each st, with 2 increases at end of row. 3rd row: 2 increases at beginning of row, 1 half d c in each st of previous row, ch 21, turn. 4th row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook and in each st of ch, 1 half d c in each st of previous row, 2 increases at end of row. Ch 2, turn. 5th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows alter­nately. 13th to 46th rows incl: 1 half d c in each st, increasing 2 sts at armhole edge until the 30th row and from this row on, make 2 decreases each row at armhole edge. 47th to 58th rows incl: Shape same as other side of sleeve (by decreasing). Make another sleeve and sew up seams. Join sides of jacket and sew in sleeves.

Collar. Starting at 15th row of right front at neck edge, work 85 half d c along neck edge to within 15 rows from edge of left front. Ch 2, turn. 2nd to 12th rows incl: 1 half d c in each half d c, ch 2, turn. Cover 6 button forms with s c, and sew but­tons on to correspond with buttonholes.

Skirt

The entire skirt is make of strips in the two shades of blue. Make 12 strips of each shade as follows: Ch 125 (or skirt length desired, remembering that there is a certain shrinkage when the next row is worked). 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook and 1 half d c in each st of ch. Ch 2, turn. 2nd to 10th rows incl: 1 half d c in each st, ch 2, turn. Sew the ends of the Skipper Blue strips to each other down for 1½ inches to form the waistline. After Skipper Blue strips are joined in this way, lay flat on table, spreading strips 2 inches apart at hem­line. Then place Blue Jewel strips underneath, touching each other at the waistline on wrong side, and joining the Skipper Blue strips at the bottom. Pin in place and sew or join with sl st the Skipper Blue strips to the Blue Jewel strips, in a tapering line, fitting them around the hipline and waistline. Leave an opening of about 4 inches down from the waistline on one of the strips.

Blouse

Back. With No. 5 hook and Skipper Blue, ch 86, turn. 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook and in each st of ch. Ch 2, turn. 2nd to 8th rows incl: 1 half d c in each st, ch 2, turn. Break thread and attach Blue Jewel. Use No. 1 hook and work loosely. 9th to 33rd rows incl: 1 half d c in each st, ch 3, turn. 34th to 45th rows incl: Continue half d c in half d c, decreasing 2 sts at beginning and 2 sts at end of each row. Break thread.

Front. Same as Back.

Sleeves. With No. 5 hook and Skipper Blue, ch 66. 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook and in each st of ch, ch 2, turn. 2nd to 4th rows incl: 1 half d c in each st, ch 2, turn. Break thread. Attach Blue Jewel and change to No. 1 hook, and work very loosely. 5th to 13th rows incl: 1 half d c in each half d c, ch 3, turn. 14th to 25th rows incl: Con­tinue half d c in half d c, decreasing 2 sts at begin­ning and 2 sts at end of each row.
Sew underarm and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves.

Collar. Join Skipper Blue at shoulder line at neck. Using No. 1 hook make 1 half d c in each half d c around neckline, ch 3, turn. 2nd to 15th rows incl: 1 half d c in each half d c, making 6 decreases in each row. Make decreases at equal intervals, but not one over another of previous row. Using 9 strands of Blue Jewel make a braided cord about a yard long. Lace up neck opening.
