Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: S c under ch-1, * ch 1, s c under next ch-1, repeat from * across, ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd row until work measures 2½ inches. Omit turning ch-2 after last row. Repeat 2nd row until work measures 8¼ inches from waistband. Then shape armhole by decreasing 1 mesh at beginning of each of next 8 rows, as follows: 1 s c between first 2 meshes, ch 3, and continue making meshes across ending as usual, ch 3, turn. Work straight for 13 rows (24 meshes to the row). Then for shoulder shaping decrease 1 mesh at both ends for 6 rows, as follows: Decrease at beginning of each row as for armhole shaping and at end by making 1 d c (instead of 1 mesh) between last mesh and last d c of previous row, ch 3, turn. Fasten off. Front. Ch 139, turn and work as for back for waistband, then for body, having 34 meshes to the row. Decrease for armholes same as for back and work 2 rows straight after armhole shaping (26 meshes). Then for neckline shaping, work as follows: 1st row: Work straight over 7 meshes, ch 3, turn. Work over these 7 meshes for 10 rows, then decrease 1 mesh each row at armhole edge for 6 rows for shoulder. Fasten off. Attach thread to beginning of 7th mesh from other armhole edge, and work other side to correspond, leaving 12 center meshes free for neckline.

Sleeves. Ch 91, turn, and work 8 rows same as for waistband. Then work 12 rows of V-meshes (22 meshes to the row). Continue for next 16 rows, decreasing 1 mesh at beginning of each row. There will be 6 meshes in last row. Make another sleeve to correspond.

Sew up side and shoulder seams, leaving waistband open at sides. Sew up sleeves and sew into armholes. Finish neckline with 4 rows of s c, making about 5 s c over 1 mesh and 4 s c along edge of 1 row, and decreasing 1 s c at each corner in each row. Make 4 buttonhole loops at each side of front waistband and sew buttons on back waistband directly opposite the loops.

Scarf. Ch 96, turn. 1st row: Sl st in 6th ch from hook, ch 3, d c in same st, * skip 7 ch sts, 1 d c in next, ch 3, sl st in same st in which d c was made, ch 3, d c in same st (2 V-meshes made), repeat from * ending row with 1 d c in last ch st. Ch 3, turn. Work straight for 21 inches. Then make slit by working to center of next row, and continue over this half of the row for 5 rows. Break thread. Join to center of unfinished row and work for 5 rows. Then continue across entire row (closing up the slit) for 5 inches. On last row make a ch-3 p between each mesh. Fasten off. Join thread to 1st st of foundation ch, at beginning of scarf, and work along other side of ch. Ch 3, s c under ch-7, * a ch-3 p, s c under same ch-7, ch 3, s c in ch in which mesh was made, ch 3, s c under next ch-7 and repeat from * ending with s c at corner. Fasten off.
