Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls of size 70, White. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8 or 9.

To begin, ch 17, turn. 1st row: D c in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch, repeat from * twice more (4 sps). Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: Skip ch-2, d c in next d c, * ch 2, d c in next d c, repeat from * across, thus making sp over sp of previous row. Ch 5, turn. Repeat 2nd row until 30 rows of sps are made. Then ch 5, turn and work around the three sides of this strip as follows: 1st row: Working across long side, make s c in next sp, * ch 5, s c in next sp, repeat from * to next corner, make 7 ch-5 loops in corner sp, ch 5, s c in next sp of short side, make 5 loops, in same sp, ch 5, s c in next sp, make 5 loops in next sp, ch 5, s c in next corner sp, make 7 loops in same corner sp, ch 5, s c in next sp of long side, ** ch 5, s c in next sp, repeat from ** to next corner (this is the neck edge), ch 5, turn. 2nd row: S c in 1st loop, * ch 6, s c in next loop, repeat from * to next corner (end opposite neck edge), across short side and up long side to end of row (neck edge), ch 6, turn. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Work as for 2nd row, ch 6, turn. 6th row: S c in 1st sp, * ch 6, s c in next sp, ch 6, s c in same sp (1 loop increased), repeat from * to end of row, ch 6, turn. 7th to 20th rows incl: Repeat from 2nd to 6th rows incl. Ch 6, turn. 21st row: S c in 1st loop, * ch 6, s c in next loop, make a ch-6 p, s c in same loop, repeat from * to end of row. Break off. Starch and press.
