This free pattern originally published by Clark's O.N.T. in Old and New Favorites Doilies Book, Number 217, in 1944.

Place Mats measure 11 x 16 ½ inches.
Runner measures 11 x 22 inches.

Materials:

J. & P. Coats or Clark’s O.N.T. Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Size 50.
Small Ball: J. & P. Coats --11 balls, or Clark’s O.N.T. --16 balls.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 12.

The above amount of material is sufficient to make 4 place mats, each 11 x 16 ½ inches, and a runner, 11 x 22 inches.

PLACE MAT (Make 4)--Motif . . . Ch 8. Join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd: Ch 6 (to count as tr and ch 1), (tr in ring, ch 1) 15 times, sl st in 5th st of starting ch-6 (16 sps).

2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * 2 sc in next sp, sc in next tr. Repeat from * around, sl st in 1st sc (48 sc).

3rd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as 1 dc), dc in next sc, * ch 2, skip next sc, dc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-2 with sl st in 3rd st of starting ch-3.

4th rnd: Sl st between the ch-3 and dc, ch 6, dc in same place as last sl st, * skip next sp, between next 2 dc make dc, ch 3 and dc. Repeat from * around. Join.

5th rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as last sl st, * 3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc between next 2 dc. Repeat from * around. Join (64 sc).

6th rnd: Ch 7, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc, ch 4, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc, * ch 4, skip 3 sc, in next sc make dc, ch 4 and d tr; skip 3 sc, in next sc make d tr, ch 4 and dc, (ch 4, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc) twice. Repeat from * around, ending with d tr in base of starting ch- 7, ch 4, sl st in 3rd st of starting ch-7.

7th rnd: Ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next sc, * ch 4, dc in next sc (bar made), ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next dc (lacet made), 6 dc in next sp, skip next d tr, in next d tr make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc, 6 dc in next sp, dc in next dc, ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next sc (another lacet made). Repeat from * around, ending with 6 dc in last sp, join with sl st in 3rd st of starting ch-5.

8th rnd: Ch 7, dc in next dc, * ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next dc (lacet made over bar), ch 4, dc in 10 dc, in corner ch-5 sp make 2 dc, ch 5 and 2 dc; dc in next 10 dc, ch 4, dc in next dc (bar made over lacet). Repeat from * around, ending with dc in last 9 dc. Join.

9th rnd: Ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next dc (lacet), * make a bar over next lacet and a lacet over next bar, dc in each dc to next corner, in corner ch-5 sp make 2 dc, ch 5 and 2 dc; dc in each dc of next dc group, make a lacet over next bar. Repeat from * around. Join.

10th rnd: Ch 7, dc in next dc (bar), * make 1 lacet and 1 bar, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next dc, dc in next dc (lacet made), ch 4, skip 4 dc, dc in next dc (bar made); make 1 lacet, in corner ch-5 sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; make (1 lacet, 1 bar) twice. Repeat from * around. Join.

11th rnd: Make (1 lacet, 1 bar) 3 times; * dc in 3 dc, in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; dc in 4 dc, (1 bar, 1 lacet) 4 times; 1 bar. Repeat from * around. Join.

12th rnd: Make (1 bar, 1 lacet) 3 times; * dc in each dc to corner sp, in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; dc in each dc of next dc group, (1 lacet, 1 bar) 4 times; 1 bar. Repeat from * around. Join.

13th rnd: * Make (1 lacet, 1 bar) 4 times; turn corner as before, (1 bar, 1 lacet), twice; 1 bar. Repeat from * around. Join.

14th and 15th rnds: Make bar over lacet and lacet over bar, work corners same as on 11th and 12th rnds.

16th rnds: * Make (1 bar, 1 lacet) 5 times; turn corner as before, (1 lacet, 1 bar) 3 times; 1 lacet. Repeat from * around. Join.

17th rnd: Make lacet over bar and bar over lacet, work corners same as on 11th rnd.

18th rnd: Ch 7, dc in next dc, (ch 4, dc in next dc) 9 times; * turn corner as on 12th rnd, (ch 4, dc in next dc) 17 times. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Make 5 more motifs. Sew 2 x 3 motifs together with neat over-and-over stitches.

Edging . . . 1st rnd: Attach thread in a corner sp, ch 1, 5 sc in sp, sc in each dc, (3 sc in next sp, sc in next dc) 17 times; sc in each dc, 2 sc in corner sp, sc in joining of motifs, 2 sc in next corner sp. Continue thus around. Join.

2nd rnd: Sl st in next 2 sc, ch 6, in same place as sl st make (dc, ch 3) twice and dc; * skip 3 sc, in next sc make dc, ch 3 and dc. Repeat from * across to next corner of mat, in corner sc make (dc, ch 3) 3 times and dc. Continue thus around. Join.

3rd rnd: Ch 6, dc in same place as sl st, (dc, ch 3 and dc in next dc) twice; * skip ch 3 and 1 dc, in next dc make dc, ch 3 and dc. Repeat from * across to next corner. Work corner as before. Continue thus around. Join.

4th rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, 4 sc in each sp around. Join.

Runner . . . Make 8 motifs. Sew 2 x 4 motifs together. Finish with Edging same as Edging on Place Mats.

Starch lightly. Pin out to measurements given and press.
