Steel Crochet Hook No. 10 or 11.

This amount is sufficient for a set consisting of 1 large doily about 15 x 20 inches and 2 smaller doilies each 10½ x 15 inches.

Large Doily … This consists of 3 round motifs and 4 pineapples (2 large and 2 small).

First Motif … Starting at center, ch 10. Join. 1st rnd: Ch 4, 27 tr in ring. Sl st in 4th st of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, skip 1 tr, sc in next tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, tr in 1st sc made. 3rd rnd: Sl st in loop formed by ch-1 and tr, ch 4 (to count as tr), then holding back on hook the last loop of each tr work 3 tr in same loop, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), * ch 7, make a 4-tr cluster in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-7 to tip of 1st cluster made. Fasten off.

Second Motif … Work 1st 2 rnds as for 1st motif. 3rd rnd: Ch 4 and complete cluster as before, ch 3, sc in a loop of 1st motif, ch 3, cluster in next loop on 2nd motif, ch 3, sc in next loop on 1st motif, ch 3, cluster in next loop on 2nd motif and complete rnd as for 1st motif (no more joinings).

Third Motif … Work as for 1st motif, joining this motif to previous motif as 2nd was joined to 1st, having 5 free loops between joinings.

Large Pineapple (Make 2) … Skip 5 free loops from joining on either end motif, attach thread to next loop, ch 15, sc in next loop. Ch 4, turn. 1st row: 29 tr in ch-15 loop. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: * Tr in next tr, ch 1. Repeat from * across, ending with tr in top st of turning ch. Ch 6, turn. 3rd row: * Tr in next tr, ch 2. Repeat from * across, ending with skip 1 st of turning ch, tr in next ch. Ch 10, turn. 4th row: * Sc in next sp, ch 5. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last sp. Ch 10, turn. 5th row: Sc in next loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Ch 10, turn. Repeat the 5th row until all loops are worked off, ending with ch 10, sc in last loop at tip of pineapple. Fasten off. This completes 1 large pineapple. Work a large pineapple in same way on other end motif.

Small Pineapple (Make 2)1st row: Skip 2 free loops from joining on center motif, attach thread to next loop, ch 4, 24 tr in same loop. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: * Tr in next tr, ch 1. Repeat from * across, ending with tr in top st of turning ch. Complete pineapple as before. Fasten off. Work another small pineapple at opposite side of same motif. Sew 1st ch-10 loop of small pineapple to free loop on end motif following joining of this motif to center motif. Sew 1st loop on other side of same pineapple to corresponding loop of other end motif. Sew 2 loops of other small pineapple to end motifs in same way.

Edging1st rnd: Attach thread to ch-10 loop at right of tip of large pineapple, ch 5, then holding back on hook the last loop of each d tr work 2 d tr in same loop, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made); ch 7, make a 3-d tr cluster in same loop, ch 7, in next ch-10 loop make cluster, ch 7 and cluster, * ch 7, cluster in next ch-10 loop. Repeat from * to within last ch-10 loop on this pineapple, ch 10, sc in last loop, ch 3, skip 2 free loops on end motif (following base of pineapple), in next loop make a 3-tr cluster, ch 3, sc in 1st ch-10 loop of small pineapple, ch 5, sl st in last ch-10 loop made on large pineapple, ch 5, make a d tr-cluster in next ch-10 loop on small pineapple, ch 7, cluster in next ch-10 loop (no more joinings) and continue thus around, making 2 clusters with ch-7 between in each of the 2 ch-10 loops at tip of each pineapple. Join last ch-7 with sl st to tip of 1st cluster made. 2nd rnd: Sl st in next 3 ch, sc in sp, * ch 10, sc in next sp. Repeat from * to sp before last cluster on large pineapple, ch 3, sc in 1st free ch-7 loop on next pineapple, ch 5, sl st in last ch-10 loop made on large pineapple, ch 5, sc in next ch-7 loop on small pineapple, ch 10, sc in next ch-7 loop and continue thus around, ending with ch 10, sl st in 1st sc made. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next 5 ch, sc in loop, (ch 13, sc in next loop) 12 times; ch 13, sc in next free ch-10 loop (on small pineapple), ch 13, sc in next loop and continue thus around. Join. 4th rnd: Sl st in next 6 ch, sc in loop, (ch 15, sc in next loop) 11 times; ch 7, sc in next sp (between pineapples), ch 7, sc in next loop (on small pineapple), ch 15, sc in next loop and continue thus around. Join. 5th rnd: Sl st in next 7 ch, sc in loop, (ch 15, sc in next loop) 10 times; ch 5 and complete a d tr cluster in last sc made, make another 3-d tr cluster in center st of next ch-15 loop (on small pineapple), ch 5, and complete a cluster in tip of clusters, sl st in center of last ch-15 loop made on large pineapple, (ch 15, cluster in same place as last cluster) twice; d tr in same place as 2nd cluster of this 5-cluster group was made, ch 7, sc in next ch-15 loop on small pineapple, ch 15, sc in next loop and continue thus around. Join and fasten off.

Small Doily (Make 2) … Work a motif as for Large Doily. Work 2 pineapples same as small pineapples of Large Doily on 1 loop at each end of motif (this is length of Small Doily). Skip 2 loops on motif, attach thread to next loop, ch 7, sc in next loop. Ch 4, turn. 1st row: 11 tr in loop. Ch 5, turn. Complete pineapple as before. Work a similar pineapple at opposite part of motif (this is width of Small Doily). Sew 1st loop of larger pineapple to end of 2nd row of smaller pineapple. Join 1st loop at other side of same larger pineapple to corresponding place on other smaller pineapple. Join the 2 end loops on opposite larger pineapple to corresponding places on smaller pineapples.

Edging1st rnd: Work as for 1st rnd of Large Doily to within last free ch-10 loop of 1st larger pineapple, ch 10, sc in next loop, sc in 1st ch-10 loop of next pineapple, ch 5, sl st in last ch-10 loop made on larger pineapple, ch 5, cluster in next ch-10 loop on smaller pineapple, ch 7 and continue thus around (no more joinings), making 2 clusters with ch 7 between in each of the 2 ch-10 loops at tip of each pineapple. Join. 2nd rnd: Sl st in next 3 ch, sc in sp, * ch 10, sc in next sp. Repeat from * to sp before last cluster on larger pineapple, ch 10, sc in 1st free ch-7 loop on next pineapple and continue thus around. Join. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next 5 ch, sc in loop and make ch-13 loops around. Join. 4th and 5th rnds: Sl st in each ch to center of loop, sc in loop and make ch-15 loops around, omitting 1 loop between pineapples. To omit a loop, make sc in each of 2 adjacent loops without the ch-15 between. Join. Fasten off at end of 5th rnd. This completes one Small Doily. Make another doily same as this. Starch all pieces lightly and press.
