MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. A.104, Size 30: 4 balls of No. 8 Blue and 1 ball of White.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 9.

A doll 8 inches tall, chest 4 ½ inches.

GAUGE: 4 loops make 1 inch; 6 loop-rows make 1 inch.

UNDERSKIRT ... Starting at waist with Blue, ch 38 loosely to reach around doll's waist. Sl st in first ch. 1st rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next ch. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, dc in first sc. 2nd rnd: * Ch 3, in next loop make sc, ch 3 and sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, dc in dc. 3rd rnd: Repeat 2nd rnd. 4th rnd: * (Ch 3, sc in next loop) 4 times; ch 3, in next loop make (sc, ch 3) twice (1 loop increased). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, dc in dc. 5th rnd: * Ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, dc in dc. Repeat 5th rnd until piece measures 5 ¾ inches. Join and break off. Attach White to first Ioop, ch 3, 4 dc in same loop, drop loop from hook, insert hook through 3rd ch of ch-3, draw dropped loop through (popcorn st made), * ch 2, 5 dc in next loop, drop loop from hook, insert hook through first dc, draw dropped loop through (an­other pc st made). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, sl st in first pc st. Break off.

Attach Blue to any ch-2 sp and work ruffle as follows: 1st rnd: Sc in same sp, ch 3, sc in same sp, * ch 3, in next sp make sc, ch 3 and sc. Re­peat from * around, ending with ch 1, dc in first sc. 2nd rnd: * Ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, end­ing with ch 1, dc in dc. Repeat last rnd until piece measures 1 inch in all. Join and break off.

UPPER SKIRT ... Work as for Underskirt until piece measures 4 ¾ inches. Break off Blue, attach White and work pc st pattern as for Under­skirt. Break off White, attach Blue and work Ruffle as for Underskirt.

BODICE ... 1st row: Place Upper Skirt on top of Underskirt and, working through both thicknesses, attach Blue to first ch of starting chain, ch 4, skip next ch, dc in next ch, * ch 1, skip next ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 1, dc in next ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in first dc, * sc in next sp, sc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top of starting chain. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each sc, increasing 8 sc evenly across—to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in 1 sc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Repeat 3rd row. 6th to 9th rows incl: Repeat 4th row. 10th row: Sc in each of next 11 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work in pattern for right side of Back for four more rows. Break off. Attach thread to last sc of Bodice and work left side of Back to correspond with right side of Back. With wrong side of work facing, work Front as follows: 1st row: Attach thread to 7th free sc of Bodice, sc in same sc, sc in each of next 20 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work in pattern over these 21 sts only for 6 more rows. Next row: Sc in each of next 9 sc, sl st across next 3 sc (for neck), sc in each of next 9 sc. Ch 1, turn.

To Shape Neck: 1st row: Sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc. Work off last 2 sc as 1 sc (1 sc decreased). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Dec 1 sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Break off. Attach thread to opposite side of neck and complete other side to correspond. Sew up shoulder seams.

SLEEVE ... 1st rnd: Attach thread at base of armhole and sc closely around. Join. 2nd rnd: Dec 2 sc, sc in each sc around, increasing 6 sc evenly across top of sleeve and decreasing 2 sts at the end of rnd. Join. Now sc in each sc around until Sleeve measures 1 inch. Next rnd: Ch 4, * skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Work other Sleeve to correspond.

NECK RUFFLE ... 1st row: Attach White to back of neck, * ch 3, sc in next st. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: In each loop across make (sc, ch 3) twice. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook (picot made), ch 1, sc in next loop, * ch 1, picot, ch 1, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Break off.

SLEEVE RUFFLE ... 1st row: At­tach White to any sp on Sleeve and in each sp around make (sc, ch 3) twice. Join. 2nd rnd: Sl st in first loop; in each loop around make (sc, ch 3) twice. Join. 3rd rnd: Sl st in first loop and work as for 3rd row of Neck Ruffle. Work other Sleeve Ruffle the same way. Attach Blue to back open­ing and sc closely across both sides. Ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc across. Break off.

Sew snap fasteners to back opening. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon, each 3 inches long and lace a piece through sps on each Sleeve. Tie into a bow. Cut another piece, 40 inches long and lace through sps at waist.

HAT ... Same as Hat for Miss New Orleans using Blue.

UMBRELLA ... Starting at bottom with White, ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 9 dc in ring. Join. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around. Join. 5th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, dc in first sc (20 loops). 6th rnd: * Ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join. 7th rnd: Work in pattern, increasing 10 loops evenly around. 8th to 11th rnds incl: Repeat last 2 rnds 2 more times (60 loops). 12th rnd: Repeat 6th rnd. 13th rnd: * Ch 1, picot, ch 1, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

Starch hat, dress and umbrella lightly and press. Sew feather to hat. Tie re­maining ribbon into a bow and sew to back of hat. Slip umbrella over a pipe cleaner and sew securely in place, catching picots to form ribs. Loop one end of pipe cleaner to form handle.
