Mexican Border Edging Pattern #7151

MATERIALS … J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of each of 2 colors, referred to as "A" and "B."
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8 or 9.
1 yd. linen, 36 inches wide.

GAUGE: 12 d c make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch. When completed, bridge cloth measures about 30 inches square.

STRIPS(Make 4). Starting at inner edge with color A, make a chain (12 ch sts make 1 inch) to measure about 1¼ yds. long. 1st row: Holding color B along chain and working over it in order to conceal it, d c in 4th ch from hook, d c in next ch; thread over, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop color A at back of work, complete d c with color B (4 color-A d c made). Always complete last d c of each color-group with color of next color-group in this manner. Make 1 color-B d c, * 4 color-A d c, 1 color-B d c, 1 color-A d c, 1 color-B d c, 4 color-A d c, 1 color-B d c. Repeat from * across until row measures 30 inches long, being sure to end with 4 color-A d c (to correspond with beginning of row). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3 (to count as d c), turn. 2nd row: 1 color-A d c in each of next 2 sts, * 1 color-B d c in each of next 3 sts, 3 color-A d c, 1 color-B d c, 1 color-A d c, 1 color-B d c, 3 color-A d c. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 color-A d c. Ch 3 (to count as d c), turn. 3rd row: Make d c's as follows: * 2 color-A, 5 color-B, 2 color-A, 1 color-B, 1 color-A, 1 color-B. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 color-A d c. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: * 1 color-A, 7 color-B, 1 color-A, 1 color-B, 1 color-A, 1 color-B. Repeat from * across, ending with 7 color-B, 1 color-A. Fasten and break off.

Measure off 1 inch from both ends of each strip, and mark with pins (28 inches between pin-marks). Cut linen 28½ inches square, and make a very narrow hem all around edges. Sew strips neatly to linen along foundation edges, omitting 1-inch sections beyond pins. Remove pins and sew corners together, mitering them.

If desired, to hold cloth securely on table, sew a 9-inch string 5 inches from each corner (8 strings in all), and tie strings under table.
