Parentheses ( ) are used to repeat everything inside the ( ) a given number of times or to explain a stitch.
Chain = ch; Stitch = st; Double Crochet = dc.

This pattern (complete in 1 sheet) contains directions for crocheting a filet wall panel; can be made either of Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton, or of No. 50 Cotton. Both the Protestant and the Catholic version of the Lord's Prayer are given. The pattern includes a filet chart for panel, also directions describing how chart is to be used.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS AND SIZES

IMPORTANT: Before you start your filet wall panel, it is most important that you make a 4" X 4" gauge sample. If after you have worked sample, and it is smaller than 4" X 4", either work looser or use a size larger hook until the gauge is reached. If your sample is larger than 4" X 4", either tighten your tension or use a size smaller hook until the gauge is reached.

No. 50 Mercerized Crochet Cotton in 450 yd. balls; a No. 12 Steel Crochet Hook required.

GAUGE:
No. 50 Cotton – 6 spaces = 1 inch; 6 rows = 1 inch.
In Heavy Cotton – 4 spaces = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch.
               
PANEL

PROTESTANT VERSION

1ST ROW: Ch 438, 1 dc in 9th st from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 9 sts, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st (this forms a space; see chart), 1 dc in each of the next 9 sts, work (ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 10 sts) 15 more times, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 19 sts, work (a space, a group of 10 dc) 17 times, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 1 dc in the end st.

2ND ROW: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first space of last row, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 7 dc, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, work (a space and a group of 10 dc) 16 times, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in each of the next 13 dc, work (a space and a group of 10 dc) 17 times, a space, 2 dc in the turning chain space, 1 dc in the 3rd st of same turning chain.

3RD ROW: Ch 3, turn, skip first dc of last row, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, (a space, and a group of 10 dc) 17 times, a space, a group of 7 dc, (a space and a group of 10 dc) 17 times, a space, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 1 dc in top st of turning chain of last row.

4TH ROW: Ch 3, turn, skip first dc of last row, 1 dc in each of the next 6 dc, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc, 2 more spaces, ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, 134 more spaces, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in each of the next 6 dc, 1 dc in top st of turning chain of last row.

5TH ROW: Ch 5, turn, skip first 3 dc of last row, 1 dc in each of the next 7 dc, 52 spaces, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc (this 4 dc group forms a block; see chart), 4 spaces, a block, 3 spaces, a block, 5 spaces, a group of 10 dc over next 3 spaces, 6 spaces, a block, 3 spaces, a block, 4 spaces, a block, 52 spaces, a group of 7 dc, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in top st of turning chain of last row.

6TH ROW: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, follow chart across working a space for each open square and a block for each crossed square on chart (4 dc worked side by side form a block; when 2 or more blocks follow consecutively work 3 dc for each and an extra dc at end), end row with 2 dc in the turning chain space, 1 dc in 3rd st of same turning chain.

Continue to follow chart to end of last row on chart; break off.

 

CATHOLIC VERSION

Follow directions for Protestant Version to end of the 6th row; follow chart to end of the 33rd row.
Now skip next 20 rows on chart and continue to follow chart from next row (A on chart) to end of last row on chart; break off.

 

BLOCKING:
Stretch and pin crocheted panel to the correct size and shape on a padded surface; cover with a damp cloth; steam (do not press) with a warm iron. Remove when dry.

FINISHING:
The wall panel can either be framed or hung from a rod. If panel is to be framed, it must have an undermat of dark color (black, brown, purple, deep red, or deep blue) to bring out the design. Or, it can be mounted on dark colored felt or sateen and hung from a rod.
