Blossom Time Rug Pattern

A beautiful combination of simple crochet stitches combining our original Puff Stitch and Sc’s • the puffs giving the embossed effect in the design • resembles the carved or embossed effect used in rugs and upholstery fabrics.

MATERIALS: ENTERPRISE YARN
4 balls each Gray and Burgundy.
1 ball each Raspberry, Dusty Rose, Ivory, Lt. & Dk. Green.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.

In Burgundy, ch 106, 105 sc on ch.

ROW 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in last sc, * 2 dc in next sc, holding last loop of each dc on hook, yarn over and through all 3 loops, 1 sc in next sc, drawn down tightly so puff st puffs out on back (right side) of work (1 puff st completed). Repeat from * across (52 puffs).

ROW 3: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st (105 sc). These rows complete first row on chart.

ROW 4: Wind off a small ball (15 or 20 yds.) of each color for design. Following chart across from left to right, ch 1, turn, sc in last sc, 1 puff st, joining Ivory through 2 loops of sc following puff, 2 puffs in Ivory. With a safety pin, fasten Ivory ball to wrong side of work. Drop Ivory on same side, join a second ball of Burgundy and make 22 puffs, join a 2nd ball of Ivory and make 2 puffs, join a third ball of Burgundy and make 22 puffs, join a third ball of Ivory and make 2 puffs, join a fourth ball of Burgundy and make 1 puff.

ROW 5: Ch 1, turn, 2 Burgundy sc, (4 Ivory sc, 44 Burgundy sc) twice, 4 Ivory sc and 3 Burgundy sc, picking up each color in turn as it is reached, and dropping it on back again. As many as a dozen or more small balls can be pinned in a row on back and used from as needed without unpinning.

ROW 6: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc, 1 Burgundy puff, 5 Ivory puffs, 16 Burgundy puffs, 3 Ivory puffs, join Gray and make 4 sc for background, 3 Ivory puffs, 16 Burgundy puffs, 5 Ivory puffs and 1 Burgundy puff.

ROW 7: Ch 1, turn, 2 Burgundy sc, 10 Ivory sc, 32 Burgundy sc, 6 Ivory sc, 4 Gray hdc, 6 Ivory sc, 32 Burgundy sc, 10 Ivory sc, 3 Burgundy sc.

ROW 8: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc, 2 Burgundy puffs, 1 Ivory puff, join second ball of Gray, 6 sc, 1 Ivory puff, 14 Burgundy puffs, 1 Ivory puff, 16 Gray sc, 1 Ivory puff, 14 Burgundy puffs, 1 Ivory puff, join a third ball of Gray, 6 sc, 1 Ivory puff, 2 Burgundy puffs.

ROW 9: Ch 1, turn, 4 Burgundy sc, 2 Ivory sc, 6 Gray hdc, 2 Ivory sc, 28 Burgundy sc, 2 Ivory sc, 16 Gray hdc, 2 Ivory sc, 28 Burgundy sc, 2 Ivory sc, 6 Gray hdc, 2 Ivory sc and 5 Burgundy sc. Be careful not to add or drop sts. Puff sts must be exactly above those on previous rows. As each color section is completed, cut yarn 6" long, fasten off on back and unpin ball.

Continue in same way—following chart to heavy center line, then reverse and work back. In the center design in rows of puffs where the same colors are close together, the yarn may be carried along and worked over—more than one color carried along and worked over will cause the design to bulge and distort the shape of rug. For long jumps work over ends not needed at once and cut—join again when needed.

EDGE: In Burgundy, make sc across both long sides. On ends, make (2-ch, sc in next second st) repeated.

FRINGE: Wind Burgundy around a 3" card and cut at one edge. Holding 3 strands, double and insert hook from underneath through first 2-ch loop on end of rug; catch loop and pull through to back, pass ends through loop and pull tight. Repeat in each loop across both ends.

Chart shows by symbols the colors to be used. The instructions given through row 4 start the rug; follow chart for color placement for balance of rug. All squares indicating Gray for background are sc and hdc rows worked alternately—2 sts of each (4 sts in all) makes one square. All other colors are puffs.
