Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (8 balls) or J. & P. Coats (6 balls) Mercerized Crochet, Size 10. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2. 3 yds. millinery wire. Thread is used double throughout.

Crown. To begin, ch 5, join to form ring. 1st rnd: 8 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each sc. 3rd rnd: * S c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next (this is an increase). Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * S c in each of next 3 s c, 2 s c in next. Repeat from * around. 5th and subsequent rnds: Increase whenever necessary to have work lie perfectly flat, until work measures 6½ inches in diameter. Do not make increases directly over increases of previous rnd. Then work without increasing for 1 inch. Then increase 8 sts in each of next 2 rnds. Then work without increasing for 1 inch; and in the next rnd again increase 8 sts. Then work without increasing for 1 inch. Next rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in next s c, ch 2, * skip next 2 s c, d c in each of next 2 s c, ch 2, repeat from * to end of rnd. Join with s c in 3rd ch of ch-3 first made.

Brim. 1st rnd: S c in next d c, 2 s c in next sp, * s c in each of next 2 d c, 2 s c in next sp. Repeat from * around. 2nd rnd: * S c in each of next 6 s c, 2 s c in next. Repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: Same as 2nd rnd. 4th rnd: * S c in each of next 10 s c, 2 s c in next. Repeat from * around. 5th and subsequent rnds: Work without increasing until brim measures from 1st rnd of brim 1¾ inches. To make brim stiff, s c over a millinery wire for the next 3 rnds. Fasten off wire and complete work with 1 rnd of s c.
