Yellow Picture Hat and Bag Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" RUG YARN, Article 44
3 skeins Lt. Yellow for Hat
4 skeins Lt. Yellow for Bag
Aluminum crochet hook size F.
⅛ yd. Buckram

HAT: Ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join or turn this or following rounds. Place a marker at beginning of each round.
2nd Round—2 s c in each s c.
3rd Round—* 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.
4th Round—* 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.
5th Round—Working in s c, increase in every 4th st.
6th Round—Increase in every 5th st. Continue working in same manner until there are 7 sts between increasing points.
Next Round—Increase 4 sts evenly spaced.
Next 9 Rounds—Work even in s c, join last round with sl st.
Next Round—Ch 3, d c in same space, 2 d c in each remaining s c, join in 3rd st of ch.
Next 4 Rounds—1 d c in each d c, join each round, cut yarn.

BRAID: Cut 12—1¼ yd. lengths of yarn, tie together about 2 inches from one end for tassel. Divide yarn into 3 strands and braid. Tie braid about 3 inches from free end. Trim tassels, block hat and place braid in position and tie.

BAG: Bottom—Ch 13, 3 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 10 sts of ch, 3 s c in last st, working on opposite side of starting ch work 1 s c in each st. Do not join or turn rounds.
2nd Round—* 3 s c in next s c (corner), 1 s c in next s c, 3 s c in next s c (corner), 1 s c in each of the next 10 s c, 3 s c in next s c (corner), 1 s c in next s c, 3 s c in next s c (corner), 1 s c in each of the next 10 s c.
3rd Round—Work 1 s c in each s c working 3 s c in center s c at each of the 4 corners. Repeat the last round twice, join, cut yarn.

UPPER SECTION: Ch 58, s c in 1st st of ch to join (be careful not to twist work), 1 s c in each remaining st of ch. Do not join or turn rounds. Work 1 round even in s c.
3rd Round—3 s c in next s c (corner), 1 s c in each of the next 9 s c, 3 s c in next s c (corner), 1 s c in each of the next 18 s c, 3 s c in next s c (corner), 1 s c in each of the next 9 s c, 3 s c in next s c (corner), 1 s c in each of the next 18 s c. Work 1 round even in s c.
5th Round—S c in next s c, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 11 s c, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 20 s c, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 11 s c, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 19 s c, sl st in next st.
6th Round—Ch 3, d c in same space, * 1 d c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 d c in next s c, repeat from * 23 times, 1 d c in remaining st, join.
Next 10 Rounds—Ch 3 and work 1 d c in each d c, join each round.

Next RoundBEADING: Ch 5, skip the next d c, tr c in next d c, * ch 1, skip next d c, 1 tr c in next d c, repeat from * all around, ch 1, join in 4th st of ch.
Next Round—S c in same space, 1 s c over next ch 1, * s c in next tr c, s c over next ch 1, repeat from * all around, do not join or turn this or following rounds.
Next 4 Rounds—1 s c in each s c, join last round, cut yarn.

FINISHING: Cut buckram same size as bottom of bag. Cut a strip of buckram 1½ inches wide and long enough to fit around 5th round of upper section of bag. Overcast long strip to piece for bottom, shaping the corners to fit s c section of bag. Place in bag and tack in position.

BRAID: Cut 6—1¼ yd. lengths of yarn, tie together about 1 inch from one end, divide yarn into 3 strands, braid and tie about 1 inch from end. Work another braid in same manner. Lace braid through beading, lacing over 2 tr c and under the next 2 tr c. Lace other braid in same manner start­ing from opposite side. Tie and knot free ends together about 2 inches from end and trim.
