Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12 or 13.
½ yd. linen 18 inches wide, to match color A or B.

Each small doily measures about 5⅛ inches in diameter; large doily measures about 14 inches in diameter.

SMALL DOILIES (Make 6) Motif 1st rnd: To make a ring, wind Ecru once around forefinger of left hand, letting 6 inches of end hang free toward you. Insert hook through the ring on finger, place color A across hook, and draw loop through; thread over and draw through loop; slip Ecru loop off finger; then with color A make 24 s c in ring, working over the double thread. Drop color A and pull the Ecru ends of ring tightly together. Tie ends and cut away only short end of Ecru. Pick up color A, sl st in 1st s c made. 2nd rnd: With color A, working over Ecru ball thread, make 9 s c. Ch 1, turn. * Make s c in each of 9 s c, picking up the back loop only of each s c and working over the Ecru thread in order to conceal it; skip 1 s c of ring, s c in next s c, picking up both loops and concealing Ecru as before (one petal made). Ch 1, turn; s c in each of 4 s c on last petal, picking up front loop only of each s c and working over Ecru thread; then make 5 s c over Ecru thread (9 s c in all). Ch 1, turn. Repeat from * around until 12 petals in all are made. Then skip 1 s c of ring, s c in next s c, ch 1, turn. Cut off Ecru, and join the first and last petals by slip stitching together 4 s c at bottom of both petals. Fasten off. Make 4 more motifs same as this. Then make 5 more motifs in color B.

Cut a piece of linen 3¾ inches in diameter. Place the 10 motifs around this piece of linen, alternating colors and having motifs adjacent to one another. Thread a needle with an 18-inch length of color A and make a very narrow scallop of satin stitch on linen, around 5 petals of color A motifs, at the same time sewing the petals to linen. Continue thus around, making satin stitch in color to correspond with motif. Cut away excess linen at back of work.

LARGE DOILY … Make 15 motifs each of color A and color B. Cut a piece of linen 12 inches in diameter, and complete as for small doilies.
