Potholder No. 10

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Art. 123 Lily Skytone Mercerized Crochet Cotton.
2 balls Red and 1 ball Cream
Crochet Hook No. 7

FRONT—In Red ch 72, sc in 2d ch from hook, * holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, make 2 dc in next ch, thread over and draw thru all lps at once for a Cluster (1 puff st made), sc in next ch pulled down tight so that the puff st puffs out on back (right side of work). Repeat from * across (35 puffs). ROW 2—Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st sc, (sc in next puff st, sc in next sc) repeated across (71 sc), completing 1st row on Chart. CHART ROW 2—Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st sc, (a puff st in next sc, sc in next sc) 35 times. Repeat Row 2. CHART ROW 3—Ch 1, turn, hold Cream along top of row, sc over it in 1st sc, (drop Cream on side towards you, a puff st in next sc, draw up Cream and make sc over it in next sc) 17 times. * In the sc after final puff, hold the 2 lps of it on hook, drop Red on side next you and draw a lp of Cream thru the 2 lps to complete sc. Always join each color in turn in this way,—thru the sc following puff. Make a puff st in next sc, draw up Red and working over it, make sc in next sc, dropping Cream on side next you and drawing Red thru the final 2 lps of sc. * Cut Cream 3" long. (In Red, make a puff st in next sc, draw up Cream end and make a Red sc over it in next sc) 17 times, working over the Cream end only with the sc between puffs, dropping it on side next you (back of work) when making the puff sts. Repeat Row 2 in Red. CHART ROW 4—Ch 1, turn, hold Cream along top of work and working over it with sc between puff sts, sc in 1st sc, (a puff st in next sc, sc in next sc) 3 times. Repeat Chart Row 3 from * to *. A Red puff st in next sc, draw up Cream, sc over it in next sc, join Cream thru the 2 lps of this Red sc, drop Red on side next you, a Cream puff st in next sc, draw up Red and make a Cream sc over it in next sc, join Red thru the 2 lps of this sc, drop Cream, (a Red puff st in next sc, draw up Cream and make a Red sc over it in next sc) 10 times, join Cream, (1 puff st, 1 sc) 3 times, join Red, (1 puff st, 1 sc) 10 times, join Cream, 1 puff st, 1 sc, join Red, 1 puff st, 1 sc, join Cream, 1 puff st, 1 sc, join Red, (1 puff st, 1 sc) 3 times. Cut Cream. Repeat Row 2 in Red. Continue, following Chart. Be careful not to add or drop sts. Puffs should be exactly above those in previous rows. Always start each Chart Row with 1 sc, then each square on Chart equals 1 puff st and 1 sc. Work back with a row of 71 Red sc to complete each Chart Row.

BACK—With Red ch 76, sk 4 ch, dc in next 72 ch. ROWS 2 thru 10—(Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 72 sts) for 9 rows. ROW 11—Ch 3, turn, dc in next 18 dc, ch 24, sk 24 dc for thumb, dc in next 30 sts. ROW 12— Ch 3, turn, dc in next 29 dc, dc in each st of ch-24, dc in next 19 sts. Repeat Row 2 twenty-two times (thru Row 34). Fasten off.

Thumb—Join to end of thumb opening closest to edge, dc in 24 dc across bottom of opening, hdc in end of opening, sc in 24 sts across top of opening. Without joining rows work dc around and around for 12 more rows, decreasing twice in each row. (To decrease, make dc in 2 sts holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, thread over and draw thru all lps on hook). Close end with (sk 1 st, sc in next st) repeated around. Fasten off and sew end tog.

Sew Back and Front tog. leaving half of 2 sides at one corner free for opening. Cover a bone ring with sc in Red. Sew to Front at open corner. Steam and press Holder dry on back thru a cloth.
