Hot Pots Potholder Pattern

MATERIALS:
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 2 balls of color A and 2 balls of color B.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.
J. & P. Coats Bias Trim, 1 yd.

Gauge: 10 d c make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at bottom, with color A ch 67. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (65 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd to 7th rows incl: D c in each st across. Ch 3, turn. 8th row: Holding color B along top of row and working over it in order to conceal it, make 9 d c, thread over, insert hook in next st and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops; drop this thread to wrong side, pick up carried thread and complete 10th color-A d c. Make 3 d c with color B, concealing color A as before and completing 3rd d c with color A. Continue thus across row, making 9 color A d c, 9 color B, 6 color A, 3 color B, 6 color A, 9 color B; drop color B to wrong side, make 10 color A. Ch 3, turn. 9th row: 10 color A, picking up color B to complete 10th st; 3 color B, 12 color A, 3 color B; complete row, following chart and carrying color B only so far as necessary to be picked up on next row (always drop carried thread to wrong side of work). Ch 3, turn. Now follow chart until word "POTS" is completed. Break off color B; work 3 rows with color A. Then work "HOT". Break off color B, work 7 rows with color A. Fasten off. Make another piece like this, reversing colors. Insert pad (see patternbook page). Join pieces by binding edges with Bias Trim. Make a Bias Trim loop at top.
