Whirligig Potholder Pattern

MATERIALS:
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 1 ball each of color A and color B.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5 or 6.
A bone ring.

Starting at center, with color A ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd to 6th rnds incl: S c in each s c, increasing 4 s c at equal distances apart—to inc., make 2 s c in 1 s c. Fasten off. 7th rnd: Attach color B and work as before, increasing 12 sts. 8th rnd: S c in each s c around (40 s c). 9th rnd: * S c in next 3 s c, leaving the last 2 loops of last s c on hook; drop color B, attach color A and draw through 2 loops on hook; holding color B at top of previous rnd and working over it so as to conceal it, make s c in 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, s c in 2 s c, leaving last 2 loops of last s c on hook; drop color A, pick up color B and draw through 2 loops. Work over color A, repeat from * around. 10th rnd: Color B s c in each color B s c; color A s c in each color A s c, increasing 1 s c in each color A sec­tion and working over unused color as in 9th rnd. 11th rnd: Same as 10th rnd. Continue in this manner, mak­ing necessary increases in each color A section to keep work flat, until piece measures 6½ inches in diameter. Fasten off. Make another piece, reversing colors.
   Place pad (see patternbook page) between the 2 pieces. Join pieces by sewing through both thicknesses. Work s c over ring. Sew ring to holder.
