The Pancake Purse Pattern #2016

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knit-Crochet, 8 balls of White. Milward's casein crochet hook No. 6 (or standard size bone or celluloid hook) and Milward's steel crochet hook No. 1. Two colored clips.

Take 6 balls and rewind together, to make 1 ball of 6 strands. Then using the No. 6 hook, ch 5, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, make 8 s c in ring. Ch 4. 2nd rnd: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, draw out loop, insert hook in 3rd ch, draw out loop, insert hook in 4th ch, draw out loop, insert hook in next s c of 1st rnd, and draw out loop (5 loops on hook). Then thread over and draw through all 5 loops at once. (This completes a star st). * Ch 1, insert hook in single loop at back of ch just made, and draw out loop, insert hook in outside threads of st just made, draw out loop, insert hook in st in which star st was just made, draw out loop, insert hook in next s c of 1st rnd, draw out loop (5 loops on hook), thread over, and draw through all 5 loops at once.

Repeat from * 7 more times. To join spiral, make a star st in the 2nd ch st of ch-4 first made. Then make star st in outside threads of 1st star st made. 3rd to 7th rnds incl: Make star sts in every st, making increases if necessary to keep work flat. Fasten off and make another circle the same.

Gusset: Using steel hook and 2 strands of thread, make a ch about 20 inches long, turn. 1st row: D c in 3rd ch from hook, d c in each st of ch, ch 3, turn. (This should now measure about 18 inches). 2nd and 3rd rows: D c in each st, making 6 decreases to the row at equal intervals. (To decrease, skip 1 st and continue working in following sts). Break off. Attach thread to foundation ch and work other side to correspond. Sew in gusset about 1½ inches from outside of circles.

Handle: With 6 threads, using casein hook, ch 7. Join with sl st to form ring. D c in each st of ch, d c in each d c and continue working in spiral until piece is about 12 inches long. Sew handle in place. Sew on clips as in illustration.
