Repeat from * across, ending row with ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 26 inches. Break off.

Bands. With color A, ch 26 to measure about 4 inches, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter, pick up only the back loop of each s c. 2nd to 6th rows incl: S c in each s c across. Break off color A, attach color B and repeat 2nd row 4 more times. Break off color B, attach main color and repeat 2nd row twice. These last 12 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 12 rows until piece measures 7½ inches, ending with a color "A" stripe. Make another piece same as this and sew one on each short side of scarf. With color B work a row of s c and ch 1 between each s c along long sides of scarf, omitting Bands.

HAT 573B

Starting at tip of crown, with main color, ch 5, join with sl st to form a ring. 1st rnd: Work 20 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, insert hook in next st, * draw loop through, yarn over hook, insert hook in next st, draw loop through, yarn over hook and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1, insert hook in same place where last loop was drawn through. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1 (20 groups in all). 3rd, 4th, and 5th rnds: * Insert hook in next st, draw loop through, yarn over hook, insert hook in next st, draw loop through, yarn over hook and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1. Repeat from * around. 6th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd, but increasing 1 group in every 3rd group. (To increase a group, make a group in same place where the last loop was drawn through). 7th and 8th rnds: Work as for 6th rnd. Then work straight without increasing until hat measures 3 inches from tip of crown. Then on each of next 2 rnds, make 5 increases. Work straight without increasing until hat measures 5½ inches from tip of crown. Break off.

Hat Band. To begin ch 13 and work as for Scarf Band until piece measures 22 inches, ending with a stripe of main color. Sew narrow ends of band together, then sew Hat Band around lower edge of crown to form upturned brim. Make 2 tassels for tip of crown by winding 3 strands (1 of each color) around 2 fingers 12 times. Then pull a double strand through the loops on fingers and tie securely. Wind a piece of yarn around tassel about ½ inch from top, and tie. Trim ends neatly.

HAND BAG 573C

Starting at center, with main color, ch 5, join with sl st to form a ring. Work 20 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, insert hook in next st, * draw loop through, yarn over hook, insert hook in next st, draw loop through, yarn over hook and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1, insert hook in same place where last loop was drawn through. Repeat from * around, ending row with ch 1 (20 groups in all). 3rd rnd: * Insert hook in next st, draw loop through, yarn over hook, insert hook in next st, draw loop through, yarn over hook and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd, but increasing 1 group in every 3rd group. (To increase a group, make a group in same place where the last loop was drawn through.) Hereafter, continue in pattern, increasing when necessary to keep work flat, until piece measures 7 inches in diameter. Break off. Make a second piece exactly the same as this.

Sew edges together leaving a seven-inch opening for slide fastener. Line bag and sew slide fastener across opening.

To cover rings, ch 9 and work as for Scarf Band until piece is long enough to cover ring, ending with main color. Sew short ends together, then cover ring and sew the two edges together along inside edge of ring. Cover 2nd ring in the same manner and sew to bag as in illustration. Make a tassel as for Hat and fasten securely to end of slide fastener. With color B work a row of sc and ch 1 alternately around edges of bag.

GLOVES 573D

Medium Size

The back of the hand and palm side are worked vertically, in two separate pieces. Then these two pieces are joined around the sides of hand and fingers.

Right Hand. Starting at wrist, ch 42 (to measure about 7 inches), turn. 1st row: Insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, * yarn over hook, insert hook in next ch, draw out a loop, yarn over hook and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1, insert hook in next st, draw out a loop. Repeat from * across (20 group sts). Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: * Insert hook in 1st group st, draw out a loop, yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1, draw out a loop, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1. Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 2nd row. 5th row: Work in pattern across to base of Middle Finger (this may be determined by laying this piece against the back of your hand), then ch 22 for Middle Finger, turn and work in pattern for 4 more rows. Break off. Attach yarn at base of Ring Finger (determine this as before), then make 1 group st, ch 18 (thus starting Ring Finger). Then work in pattern across chain (8 patterns) and across next 5 group sts, sl st in next group st, turn and work to fingertip. Work 2 rows straight, working across entire row. Break off. Attach yarn at wrist and work to base of Little Finger, then ch 14 (thus starting Little Finger) and work for 3 more rows. Break off.

Palm Side. To begin, ch 46, turn and work in pattern as for Back of hand (22 group sts). Ch 2, turn and work 3 more rows. Break off. This strip forms the underside of thumb and inside of Forefinger. Make a similar strip starting with ch 36 (17 group sts). Break off.

Thumb. Place 2nd strip in position over 1st strip so that foundation chains of both strips meet. Place a pin at one end to hold strips together. From the end with the pin, count 8 groups along foundation chain, attach color B in next sp and work back over these 8 groups as follows: * Ch 1, s c in next ch-1 sp, working s c through the 2 strips in order to join them to form thumb. Repeat from * along the group sts, then across the end, and continue up on other side along 8 groups. Break off. This completes the thumb. Try work on right thumb, having the shorter strip extend toward the wrist to form inside of hand. Attach yarn at wrist and work to base of Middle Finger, then continue as for Back of hand until all fingers are made. Break off.
Joining. Place one piece over the other so that fingers correspond. Attach color B at wrist and join the 2 pieces with ch 1 and s c (as in thumb) around fingers.

Cuffs. To begin, with color A ch 26 (to measure about 4½ inches), turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each s c. 2nd to 6th rows: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Break off. 7th to 10th rows incl: Attach color B and repeat 2nd row. Break off. 11th and 12th rows: Attach main color and repeat 2nd row. Break off. These 12 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 12 rows until piece is long enough to go around edge of wrist. Break off.

Sew narrow edges of cuff together. Sew cuff to edge of wrist.

Band. With color A ch 46, turn and work 4 rows in pattern. Break off. Sew this piece across center back of hand. Then, with 2 strands of color B, make a chain about 16 inches long. Break off. Lace this chain across the center band on back of hand. Make 2 tassels as for Hat and sew one on each end of chain.

Left Hand. Since there is no wrong side to this work, make two pieces exactly as for Right Hand, but join to correspond with Left Hand.
