MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 18 balls of White or Ecru, or 29 balls of any color.
or
CLARK'S O.N.T. LUSTERSHEEN, 18 skeins of White or Ecru, or 24 skeins of any color.
MILWARD'S Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

GAUGE … 6 sps make 2¼ inches; 6 rows make 2¼ inches. Each block measures about 21½ inches square, before blocking. Completed tablecloth measures about 73 x 97 inches.

BLOCK … Starting at center, ch 8, tr in 5th ch from hook, tr in next 3 ch. Work is now done in rounds. 1st rnd: Ch 7 (to count as tr and ch-3); in same place as last tr make tr, ch 7 and tr. Ch 3, skip 3 tr, tr at base of turning ch, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr. Ch 3, tr at top of turning ch, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, ch 3, skip 3 tr, tr in next tr, ch 3, join with tr in 4th ch of ch-7 first made (8 sps in rnd).

   2nd rnd: Ch 4, 3 tr over bar of last tr, tr at base of same tr—1 bl made. * Ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch; ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next tr—a shadow sp made. Make 3 tr over next ch, tr in 4th st of same ch—another bl made. Ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, 3 tr over same ch, tr in next tr. Repeat from * 2 more times, ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 1, tr in next tr, 3 tr over next ch, tr in top of joining tr of previous rnd, ch 3, join with tr in 4th st of ch-4 first made.

   3rd rnd: Ch 4, 3 tr over bar of last tr, tr at base of same tr, tr in next 4 tr—bl over bl. * (Ch 1, tr in next tr) twice—shadow sp made over shadow sp. Make tr in next 4 tr, 3 tr over next ch, tr in 4th st of same ch, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, 3 tr over same ch, tr in next 5 tr. Repeat from * 2 more times, (ch 1, tr in next tr) twice; tr in next 4 tr, 3 tr over next ch, tr in top of joining tr of previous rnd, ch 3, join with tr in 4th st of ch-4 first made.

   Starting with 4th rnd, follow chart until 6th rnd is completed. 7th rnd: Ch 5 (to count as tr and ch-1), tr in center of bar of last tr, ch 1, tr at base of same tr. * (Ch 1, skip 1 tr, tr in next tr) 10 times—3 shadow sps made over 5 bls. Make shadow sp over shadow sp, shadow sp over next 5 bls; (ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch) twice. Ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 1, tr in next tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in 4th ch of ch-5 first made.

   8th rnd: Ch 4, 3 tr over bar of last tr, tr at base of same tr. * Shadow sp over shadow sp; (tr in next ch, tr in next tr) 8 times—4 bls made over 4 shadow sps. Make shadow sp over next 3 shadow sps, 4 bls, 1 shadow sp, 3 tr over next ch, tr in 4th st of same ch, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, 3 tr over same ch, tr in next tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in 4th st of ch-4 first made. Starting with 9th rnd, follow chart until block is completed. Fasten off.

   Make 3 x 4 blocks, and sew blocks together on wrong side with neat over-and-over stitches.

EDGING 1st rnd: Attach thread to one tr, ch 4 and work tr in each tr, tr in each ch-1, and 3 tr in each space all around, making 4 tr, ch 7 and 4 tr at corners. Join with sl st to top of ch-4 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 5 (to count as tr and ch-1), skip 1 tr, * tr in next tr, ch 1, skip 1 tr. Repeat from * to corner ch-7. Over ch-7, make (ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch) twice, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, (ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next st) twice. Work around and join with sl st to 4th ch of ch-5 first made. 3rd rnd: Ch 4, tr in each tr and each ch-1 around, making 4 tr, ch 7 and 4 tr in corners. Fasten off.
