MATERIALS:
CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 20, 1 ball
Steel crochet hook No. 8 or 9.
A piece of linen 12 x 18 inches.

Completed tray mat measures 12½ x 18 inches. Make a ¼-inch hem around linen leaving 2½ inches unhemmed on both sides of each corner.

CORNER LACE (Make 4) … Ch 10. Join to form ring. 1st row: Ch 3, 14 dc in ring. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Dc in next 2 dc, (ch 2, dc in next 3 dc) 4 times, making last dc in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, (ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) 3 times; ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, dc in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2, dc in next 2 dc, in next dc make dc, ch 3 and dc; dc in next 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, dc in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: Dc in next 3 dc, ch 6, skip 1 dc, ch 2 and 1 dc; dc in next 5 dc, ch 6, skip 1 dc, dc in next 3 dc, ch 3, sc in next sp, ch 3, dc in next 3 dc; complete remainder of row to correspond with beginning. Ch 3, turn.
   6th row: Dc in next 2 dc, ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, skip 1 dc, dc in next 3 dc, ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, skip 1 dc, dc in next 2 dc, dc in each of next 2 loops with ch-1 between, dc in next 2 dc; complete remainder of row to correspond with beginning. Ch 4, turn. 7th row: Make a 2-tr cluster over next 2 dc by holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, (ch 7, sc in next loop) twice; ch 7, make a 3-tr cluster over next 3 dc, (ch 7, sc in next loop) twice, ch 7; holding back on hook the last loop of each tr make tr in next 6 dc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook; complete remainder of row to correspond with beginning. Ch 10, turn. 8th row: Sc in next loop, 12 tr in next loop, sc in next loop, ch 7, sc in next loop, 12 tr in next loop, sc in next loop, ch 10, sc in next loop; complete remainder of row to correspond with beginning, ending with ch 10, sl st in top of cluster. Fasten off.
   Sew lace pieces to corners, cutting away excess linen underneath and making a hem. Attach thread to linen edge ½ inch from lace and work as follows: Ch 5, sc in same place (a loop made), * ch 7, skip ½ inch on linen edge, make sc, ch 5 and sc in same place. Repeat from * across to within last ½ inch, having an uneven number of loops. Fasten off. Work in this manner along opposite edge and the two short edges.
   Now attach thread to 1st loop on corner lace and work around corner and all around tray mat as follows: Ch 4 and complete a cluster in same loop, (ch 7, 3-tr cluster in same loop) twice; ch 3, skip 5 tr, sc in next tr, ch 5, sc in next tr, ch 3, in next loop make four 3-tr clusters with ch-7 between; ch 3, skip 5 tr, sc in next tr, ch 5, sc in next tr, ch 3, 20 tr in next loop, ch 1, turn, sc in each tr of tr-group, ch 4, turn, tr in next 3 sts holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, (ch 7, make a 4-tr cluster over next 4 sts) 3 times; ch 7, make a 3-tr cluster over next 3 sts, ch 4, sc in next sc, ch 3, skip 5 tr, sc in next tr; ch 5, sc in next tr, ch 3, in next loop make four 3-tr clusters with ch-7 between, ch 3, skip 5 tr, sc in next tr, ch 5, sc in next tr, ch 3, in next loop make three 3-tr clusters with ch-7 between; ch 3, sc in next ch-5 loop, ch 3, in next ch-5 loop make three 3-tr clusters with ch-7 between; ch 3, sc in next ch-5 loop and continue thus all around. Fasten off.
