Charmer Sweater Pattern #160

Size 34-36

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 5 balls of White; or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita, 6 balls. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 1. 3 Pearl Buttons.

Gauge: 4 star sts equal 1 inch. 3 rows equal 1 inch. Work is done very loosely.

For different size or shaping, turn to directions on patternbook page.

Back: Ch 152, turn. 1st row: Thread over, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, draw up a loop ¼ inch long, * skip 1 ch, draw up ¼ inch loops in each of next 2 sts (5 loops on hook), draw through all 5 loops at once, then ch 1 loosely (this ch-1 closes the 5 loops). 1 star stitch is completed. Then thread over, insert hook in same ch where last loop was drawn through and draw up a ¼ inch loop, and repeat from * to end of ch. (50 star sts.) Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Thread over, draw a ¼-inch loop through ch-1 of last star st of previous row, * thread over, draw a ¼-inch loop through ch-1 of next star st (5 loops on hook), draw through all 5 loops, ch 1, thread over, draw a ¼-inch loop through ch-1 of same star st as last loop was made, repeat from * to end of row, finishing last star st with the loop drawn through the turning ch of previous row. Ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd row till work measures 13¼ inches without stretching. This brings work up to the underarm.

To shape underarm, after the turning ch of the last row, sl st in first ch-1, * ch 1, sl st in next ch-1, repeat from * twice more, then continue with star sts across to within 4 sts from end. There should be 42 star sts in row. Ch 2, turn. Decrease 1 star st at beginning of each of next 4 rows (38 star sts remaining). Then work 14 rows evenly, which brings work up to shoulder. Decrease 1 st at beginning of next row. Then decrease 1 st at beginning and 1 st at end of each row (2 sts decreased in the row) till only 23 star sts remain. Shoulder line should measure about 4 inches without stretching.

Front: Make the same as the back and work evenly in pattern till work measures 11½ inches without stretching (about 40 rows). Yoke. Right Side: This is worked vertically (heretofore blouse was worked horizontally). Do not break thread, but ch 20 and make 6 star sts over this ch-20. Ch 2, turn. Work 3 rows evenly, then start shaping armhole. Increase 1 star st beginning of next row by drawing through the first loop in the 2nd st of turning ch-2 of previous row and proceeding as before (7 star sts in row). Work next row straight. Increase 1 st at beginning of next row. Work next row straight. Increase 1 st at beginning of next row. (9 star sts.) Work back over 8 star sts, then ch 50 (to reach shoulder seam). Work 16 star sts on the ch-50 and continue over the 8 stars of previous row (24 stars in row). Ch 2, turn. Work next row straight. Increase 1 st at beginning of next row, and at beginning of every 2nd row (having increases come at shoulder seam edge only) until 7 sts have been increased. (13 rows from where ch-50 started.) Then when working back towards neck, work to within 7 stars from end of row (this is to shape the neck). Decrease 1 st at neck edge every row, until 18 sts remain. Then work straight to end of 38th row.

Left Side: Make the same as the right side, only continue decreasing 1 st every 2nd row at neck edge for the last three rows. (16 sts will remain.)

Sleeve: (Worked vertically.) Ch 48. Make 15 stars on this ch. At end of 2nd row start to increase for the top of sleeve. Increase 1 star st at beginning of 3rd row, at end of 4th row, and so on, increasing 1 st on each row, keeping the increases all at one edge, until there are 29 stars. (16 rows.) Work next 9 rows straight, then decrease 1 star st on each row at same edge until only 15 star sts remain, then work 2 rows straight. Make another sleeve to correspond.

Jabot: Ch 50. Make star sts on this ch. Work 3 rows evenly, decrease 1 st at beginning of 4th row, work 3 more rows evenly, decrease 1 st at end of 8th row, work 3 more rows evenly, decrease 1 st at beginning and decrease 1 st at end of 12th row. Work 2 more rows evenly. Press all pieces before joining the blouse together. When pressing the front, place the yoke in position and press at the same time. Whip the yoke on to the front and leave an opening for the jabot to slip through as illustrated. Join shoulder seams and sew sleeves to the armhole. Join sleeve seams and underarm seams. Make 3 rows of s c around bottom of blouse, around neckline, and jabot. Make 5 rows of s c around bottom of sleeves. Slip jabot in 3-inch opening at yoke and finish sewing yoke.

Belt: Make a ch same length as belt desired, turn and work star sts as for Back for 3 rows. Then work 3 rnds of s c's around belt, making enough s c's across the two ends to keep work flat, and 1 s c in each st on long edges. Fasten with a buckle.
