BACK … Starting at lower edge with White, make a chain 24 inches long (8 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * dc in next ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across until there are on row 106 (112-112-116-120) sts, ending with a dc. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * Sc over dc, dc over sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 3 (3½-3½-4-4) inches. Keeping continuity of pattern, inc 1 st at both ends of next row and every 9th (10th-6th-5th-5th) row thereafter, until there are 122 (128-136-144-152) sts on row. Work without increasing until piece measures 10½ (10½-10½-10½-11) inches in all.

To Shape Armholes: Sl st across first 8 sts (8 sts decreased), work across in pattern to within last 8 sts. Turn. Work in pattern until piece measures from decreased sts 5¾ (6¼-6¼-6¾-6¾) inches. On next row work in pattern across next 32 (34-38-40-42) sts. Turn. Work over these stitches only until piece measures 7 (7½-7½-8-8) inches from decreased stitches. Break off. Skip 42 (44-44-48-52) sts at base of piece just finished. Attach thread to next st and work other shoulder to correspond.

FRONT … Work exactly as for Back until piece measures 2 (2¼-2¼-2½-2½) inches from decreased stitches. On next row work in pattern across next 48 (50-54-58-62) sts. Turn and work over these stitches only until piece measures 5 (5-5-5½-5½) inches from decreased sts, ending at front edge, turn. Sl st across 16 (16-16-18-20) sts and work over remaining 32 (34-38- 40-42) sts until piece measures 7 (7½-7½-8-8) inches from decreased sts. Break off. Skip 10 (12-12-12-12) sts, attach thread to next st and complete other side to correspond.

Sew shoulder seams.

SLEEVE BAND (Make 2) … With Spanish Red, ch 12. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Drop Spanish Red. 3rd and 4th rows: Attach White and repeat 2nd row. The last 4 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece is long enough to go around armhole, ending with Spanish Red. Then work a row of Red sc closely around all edges, keeping work flat. Sew short ends together.

FRONT AND NECK BANDS … Make a chain 2 inches longer than width of Back neck shaping and work as for Sleeve Bands for 10 rows. Then work over first 12 sts only in pattern until this piece reaches ½ inch above front neck shaping, ending with 2 White rows. Pick up Spanish Red and work across 12 sts, then make a chain long enough to extend to farthest edge and directly above the sts at base of neck opening (this is for button overlap). Turn. Work over these stitches in pattern for 2 more rows, ending at front edge. On next row make sc in next 3 sc, ch 4, skip 4 sc (buttonhole) and continue in pattern until 9 rows have been completed on the extension piece. Then work over the first 12 sts (for buttonband) in pattern, making a buttonhole as before on every other White stripe until 7 buttonholes in all have been made. Work 8 more rows in pattern. Break off. Attach thread to the 12th sc on back band and work other half of front band to correspond, omitting the buttonholes.

Block pieces to measurements. Sew up side seams, leaving a 3-inch opening at both sides at lower edges for opening. With White work a row of sc closely around opening, making 2 ch-5 buttonloops on each side of Front. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonloops. Sew sleeve and neckbands in place. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
