Pine Cone Bedspread Pattern #65

There are slight variations to materials and instructions between these two versions of the same pattern in different publications. Two versions are below.

Pine Cone Pattern #65 from Spool Cotton #65, New Book of Bedspreads.

Hinting of the sweet odor of old pines and bringing the deep woods into the home in appropriate manner, this bold design alternates solid and openwork crochet very effectively. One of the large squares alone makes an attractive doily for the table by the bed.

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton, for double size spread, 11 x 13 blocks (finished size about 88 x 104 inches), 28 balls or hanks of White or Ecru; for single size spread, 9 x 13 blocks (finished size about 72 x 104 inches), 22 balls or hanks. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4.

Gauge: Blocks are 8 inches square. (Each block requires 75 yards of thread).

Ch 4. 1st rnd: 12 d c in 4th ch from hook, sl st to 1st st. Pull beginning thread tight and fasten firmly. Ch 3 (to count as 1 d c) and turn. 2nd rnd: 1 d c in back loop of 1st st and 2 d c in back loops of every st of previous rnd. Sl st to ch 3 at end of rnd. Ch 3, turn. 3rd rnd: 2 d c into top of ch 3 of previous rnd, * ch 4, 1 s c in 4th ch from hook, skip 2 d c of previous rnd, 3 d c in next st and repeat from * around, finishing with ch 4, 1 s c in 4th ch from hook, and sl st to ch 3 at beginning of rnd. Ch 9, turn. 4th rnd: Beginning in 4th ch from hook make 1 d c into each ch (6 d c). * Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in 2nd and each of remaining d c and top of ch 3 (6 d c) *. Repeat between *'s once. ** In previous rnd skip 2 d c, ch 4 with p and make 1 tr tr into 1st d c of next group. Ch 3, then make 6 d c over tr tr. Repeat from * to * twice. Then repeat from ** around circle and finish rnd with sl st into end ch of 1st large square. Ch 3.

5th rnd: Sl st to top of 1st row of d c in 1st square, ch 3, sl st to top of 2nd row, ch 3, sl st to top of 3rd row. * Ch 5, 1 s c in 2nd d c of top of square, ch 5, 1 s c in 4th d c, ch 5, 1 s c in top of 1st row of d c in next square, ch 5, 1 s c in top of 2nd row of d c, ch 5, 1 s c in top of 3rd row and repeat from * around. Finish rnd with sl st into 1st s c. 6th rnd: Ch 5, s c in 2nd ch-3, ch 5, s c in 3rd ch-3, this brings thread to top of block, sl st to 3rd st of ch-5, * ch 5, 1 s c over next ch-5 loop, and repeat from * around. Finish row with sl st to ch at beginning of rnd. 7th rnd: Sl st into 1st ch-5 (to bring thread to top of 1st ch-5 loop of rnd below), * ch 5, 1 s c over next loop. * Repeat from * to * twice. ** Into next loop put 2 d c, 2 tr, ch 3, 2 tr, 2 d c, then 1 s c over next loop. Repeat from * to * until 8 ch-5 loops have been made. Then repeat from **. Finish with 5 ch-5 loops and sl st into 1st loop. 8th rnd: Sl st into 1st ch-5, * ch 5, 1 s c over next loop *. Repeat from * to * once. ** Make 1 d c in each of 4 sts of group below, 3 d c over ch-3, ch 3, 3 more d c over ch-3, and 1 d c into each of 4 sts of next group. 1 s c in next ch-5 loop. Repeat from * to * until 7 loops have been made. Then repeat from **. Finish rnd with 5 loops and sl st into 1st loop.

9th rnd: Sl st into 1st ch-5, * ch 5, 1 s c over next loop *. ** Into each st of group below, 1 d c, over ch-3 put 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c, then 1 d c into each st of group below, 1 s c into next ch-5 loop. Repeat from * to * until 6 ch-5 loops have been made, then repeat from **. Finish row with 5 ch-5 loops, and sl st into 1st loop. 10th rnd: Sl st into 1st ch-5, then repeat 9th rnd but make only 5 loops between corners. 11th rnd: Same as 9th rnd, but with 4 loops between corners. 12th rnd: Same as 9th rnd, with 3 loops between corners. Finish rnd with sl st across to 1st d c. 13th rnd: * Ch 5, skip 1 d c, 1 s c in next d c *. Repeat from * to * 7 times (8 loops). Ch 5, skip 2 d c, 1 s c over ch-3 loop, ch 5, skip 2 d c, 1 s c in next s c, and repeat from * to * 8 times. Ch 3, 5 d c over each of next 3 ch-5 loops. Ch 2, skip 1 d c, s c into next d c. Work around other 3 corners in same way. At end of rnd ch 2, make 1 s c over 1st loop.

14th rnd: * Ch 5, 1 s c over next loop, repeat from * until 1 loop has been made into each loop of rnd below, then ch 2, 1 d c in each d c, ch 2, and repeat from * around. Finish with ch 2, 1 s c over 1st loop. 15th rnd: * Ch 5, 1 s c over next loop, repeat from * until 1 loop has been put into each loop of rnd below. Then ch 2, ** 13-dc cluster, ch 5, and repeat from ** until 5 clusters have been made. Ch 2, 1 s c over 1st loop, repeat from * around. Sl st to 1st loop at end of rnd, and finish off.

In joining the squares on last rnd of 2nd square, ch 2, then sl st into the corresponding loop of the adjacent square, then ch 2 to complete 1 loop. At the middle of the sides join in the same manner at the ch-5's. Between the Clusters. When joining the 4th square to the other 3, fill the corners with a long petalled daisy, as follows: After working to the corner, ch 8, sl st into 4th ch from hook (to make center), ch 4, sl st into next loop around square, ch 4, 1 s c in center loop, and repeat from * until all the loops have been caught. Then finish last side of 4th square.

Pine Cone Pattern #65 from Spool Cotton #85, Bedspreads.

MATERIALS:
1 Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7
Choose one of the following threads:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen (approx. 39 balls)
Clark's O.N.T. Lustersheen (approx. 30 skeins)
Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton (approx. 30 balls)

This amount is sufficient for a double size spread in White or Ecru. Color requires about one-fourth more.

Gauge: Each block measures about 8 inches square and requires about 75 yards of thread. For a double size spread (about 96 x 104 inches), or a single size spread (about 72 x 104 inches), make the necessary amount of blocks and then join them together to correspond with measurement.

Block. 1st rnd: Ch 4, 12 d c in 4th ch from hook. Join with sl st to 3rd st at turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd rnd: D c in back loop of next d c, 2 d c in back loop of each of next 11 d c (24 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c). Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. Ch 3, turn. 3rd rnd: 2 d c in same place as sl st, * ch-4 p, skip 2 d c, 3 d c in next d c, repeat from * until 8 p's (separated by 3-d c groups) are made, then sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. Do not turn work. 4th rnd: Ch 9, d c in 4th ch from hook and d c in each of next 5 ch (7-d c group, counting turning ch as 1 d c), ch 3, turn. * D c in each of next 6 sts of 7-d c group, ch 3, turn. D c in each of next 6 sts of same 7-d c group (thus a block is made). Skip 3-d c group and next p of 3rd rnd, make a tr tr in 1st d c of next 3-d c group, ch 3, 6 d c over tr tr (along the bar) just made (another 7-d c group just made), ch 3, turn. Repeat from * around (8 blocks in all). Join with sl st to base of turning ch of 1st block. Sl st in each of next 2 ch sts of same turning ch (this brings work to top of 1st row of d c of block). 5th rnd: * Ch 5, s c in top of 2nd row of d c of block, ch 5, s c in top of corner st of square, ch 5, skip next d c on other side of square, make s c in next d c, ch 5, skip 1 d c, s c in next d c, ch 5, s c in top of 1st row of d c on next block, repeat from * around. Join last ch 5 with sl st to base of first loop of rnd. Sl st along to center of same first loop. 6th rnd: * Ch 5, s c in next loop, repeat from * around. Join last ch 5 with sl st to base of first loop of rnd. Sl st along to center of same first loop. 7th rnd: ** In next loop make: 2 d c, 2 tr, ch 3, 2 tr, 2 d c. Then s c in next loop (one corner made), * ch 5, s c in next loop, repeat from * until 8 loops are made. Then repeat from ** around, ending rnd with 8 loops. 8th rnd: ** D c in each of next 2 d c, d c in each of next 2 tr, 3 d c in ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 d c in same sp, d c in each of next 2 tr, d c in each of next 2 d c, s c in next loop (one corner made), * ch 5, s c in next loop, repeat from * until 7 loops are made. Then repeat from ** around, ending rnd with 7 loops. 9th rnd: * D c in each d c of d c-group. In corner ch-3 sp make: 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c. Then d c in each d c of d c-group on other side of block, s c in next loop (one corner made), make 6 loops, then repeat from * around, ending rnd with 6 loops. 10th rnd: Repeat 9th rnd, having 5 loops between corners instead of 6 loops. 11th rnd: Same as 10th rnd, having 4 loops in place of 5 loops. 12th rnd: Same as 11th rnd, having 3 loops in place of 4 loops. 1 3th rnd: ** S c in 1st d c of next d c-group, * ch 5, skip 1 d c, s c in next d c, repeat from * until 8 loops are made, then ch 5, s c in corner ch-3 sp, ch 5, skip 2 d c, s c in next d c, ch 5, skip 1 d c, s c in next d c, make 7 more loops (to correspond with other side of corner), then ch 2, 5 d c in each of next 3 loops, ch 2, s c in 1st d c of d c-group. Repeat from ** around. End rnd with ch 2, s c in next s c. 14th rnd: * Ch 5, s c in next loop, repeat from * until 18 ch-5 loops are made, ** then ch 2, d c in each of next 15 d c, ch 2, s c in ch-5 loop, make 17 more ch-5 loops, then repeat from ** around. End rnd with ch 2, s c in 1st loop. 15th rnd: Ch 5, s c in next loop, make 16 more ch-5 loops, ** ch 2, d c in each of first 3 d c of d c-group, working them off as a cluster, * ch 5, d c in each of next 3 d c of d c- group, working them off as a cluster, repeat from * until 5 clusters are made, then ch 2, s c in next loop, make 16 ch-5 loops. Then repeat from ** around, join and break off.

In joining the squares on last rnd of 2nd square, ch 2, then sl st into the corresponding loop of the adjacent square, then ch 2 to complete 1 loop. At the center of the sides join in the same manner at the ch-5's.
