SUNSUIT No. 5036-A

Size 4-6

Right Back … Starting at bottom, ch 76 to measure about 11 inches. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, * d c in next ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with s c in last ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * S c in next d c, d c in next s c. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: * D c in next s c, s c in next d c. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. The 2nd and 3rd rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern, increasing 1 st—by working 2 sts in 1 st—at end of every other row until piece measures 1¾ inches (this is crotch shaping). Now work 1½ inches more, decreasing 2 sts at edge where increases were made before, thus starting center back shaping—to dec. a st, work off 2 sts as 1 st. Then work without decreasing until piece measures 10¼ inches in all. Keeping center back edge straight, dec. 9 sts each row at opposite edge 7 times—to dec. 9 sts at beginning of row, sl st across 1st 9 sts; at end of row, work to within last 10 sts, sl st in next st, turn. Fasten off.

Left Back … Work exactly as for Right Back.

Right Front … Starting at bottom, ch 67 to measure about 10 inches and work exactly as for Right Back until piece measures 10¼ inches in all. Now work 1 more inch, keeping center front edge straight and decreasing 2 sts each row at opposite edge. Work 3 more inches, decreasing 1 st each row at same edge. Work 3 rows without decreasing. Fasten off.

Left Front … Work exactly as for Right Front.

Front Band … Starting at narrow end, ch 14 and work 3 rows in pattern as for Right Back. Next row: Work across 1st 4 sts, ch 4, skip 4 sts, work across last 5 sts. Following row: Work in pattern across, making 4 sts over the ch-4 (thus completing buttonhole). Work in pattern until piece measures 8¼ inches, making another buttonhole at opposite end. Fasten off.

Suspender Straps (Make 2) … Starting at narrow end, ch 10 and work in pattern for 16". Fasten off.

Sew up crotch, center front, center back and side seams. Attach thread to right side seam and work a row of s c around upper edges of sunsuit. Do not break off but * ch 5, s c ½ inch down and ½ inch to the left; ch 5, s c 1 inch from last s c at top. Repeat from * across Back (casing for elastic). Run elastic through casing.

Trimming … Attach contrasting color to one corner of front band and, working along one long side only, ch 3, 2 d c in same place where ch-3 started, * skip 2 sts, s c in next st, ch 3, 2 d c in same st. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.

Sew front band to top of Fronts, having trimming extend beyond seam. Sew one end of a suspender strap to top of each Back piece, 1½" from center back seam. Sew a button to each strap.

BONNET No. 5036-B

Brim … Starting at base of brim, ch 115 to measure about 16 inches. Work in pattern until piece measures 2 inches. Now work 1 more inch, decreasing 2 sts at both ends of each row—to dec. a st, work off 2 sts as 1 st. Fasten off.

Crown … Starting at front edge, ch 115 to measure about 16 inches and work in pattern for 3¾ inches, increasing 2 sts at both ends of every 3rd row—to inc. a st, make 2 sts in 1 st. Then work as follows: 1st row: Work across 1st 27 sts, turn. 2nd row: Sl st in 1st 5 sts, work in pattern across. Ch 1, or 3 (as pattern requires), turn. 3rd row: Work to within last 6 sts, sl st in next st, turn. 4th row: Sl st in 1st 5 sts, work across next 4 sts, ch 5, skip 5 sts, work across remaining sts. Ch 1, or 3, turn. 5th row: Work across to within last 6 sts, making 5 sts over the ch-5 (buttonhole completed), sl st in next st, turn. 6th row: Sl st in 1st 5 sts, work across remaining 2 sts. Fasten off. Attach thread to 27th st from opposite side edge and work to correspond with side just completed. Attach thread to 10th st from decrease-edge of side first completed, work to within 9 sts from opposite decrease-edge. Ch 1 (or 3), turn. Work over these sts for 3½ more inches, decreasing 1 st at both ends of each row. Work without decreasing until piece measures 10½" across center. Fasten off.

Work a row of s c around edges of all pieces. With contrasting color make crocheted trimming at outer edge of crown as for Sunsuit No. 5036-A. Sew brim to crown, having trimming extend over brim (see illustration). Sew a piece of ribbon, 18 inches long, to each side of bonnet, where brim is joined to crown. Sew button at center of back flap, ¾ inch in from outer edge.
