FIRST STRIP … Starting at one end, ch 4. 1st row: 4 d c in 4th ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in each of 1st 2 sts, s c in next st, 2 s c in next st, 2 s c in top st of turning ch (4 sts in all increased). Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: Tr in back loop of next (2nd) s c, and each following s c across (9 tr, counting turning ch). Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Insert hook in back loop of 1st tr and in back loop of corresponding st below (on previous row), thread over, draw loop through and finish as for an s c. * Insert hook in back loop of next tr and in back loop of corresponding st below and complete as before. Repeat from * across, making last st in top of turning ch and in back loop of corresponding st below—a ridge made. Turn. 5th row: Ch 3 (to count as d c), 2 d c in first st (2 d c increased). D c in next 7 sts, 3 d c in last st (2 more d c increased—4 sts increased in row). Ch 1, turn. 6th row: 2 s c in each of 1st 2 sts, s c in next 9 sts, 2 s c in next st, 2 s c in top st of turning ch (4 sts increased in row). D c in next 23 sts, 4 d c in last st (3 more d c increased—6 sts increased in row). Ch 1, turn. 14th row: Work as for 6th row, having 27 s c between increases (35 sts). Ch 4, turn.
15th row: Same as 3rd row (35 tr, counting turning ch). Ch 1, turn. 16th row: Same as 4th row (35 sts). Turn. 17th row: Work as for 5th row, having 33 d c between increases (39 sts). Ch 1, turn. 18th row: Work as for 6th row, having 35 s c between increases (43 sts). Ch 4, turn. 19th row: Same as 3rd row (43 tr, counting turning ch). Ch 1, turn. 20th row: Same as 4th row (43 sts). Turn. 21st row: Work as for 5th row, having 41 d c between increases (47 sts). Ch 1, turn. 22nd row: Work as for 6th row, having 43 s c between increases (51 sts). Ch 4, turn. 23rd row: Same as 3rd row (51 tr, counting turning ch). Ch 1, turn. 24th row: Same as 4th row (51 sts). Turn. 25th row: Same as 13th row, having 49 sts between increases. Ch 1, turn. 26th row: Work as for 6th row, having 53 sts between increases (61 sts). Ch 4, turn. 27th row: Same as 3rd row (61 tr, counting turning ch). Ch 1, turn. 28th row: Same as 4th row (61 sts). Turn. 29th row: Work as for 5th row, having 59 sts between increases (65 sts). Ch 1, turn. 30th row: Work as for 6th row, having 61 s c between increases (69 sts). Ch 4, turn. 31st row: Same as 3rd row (69 tr, counting turning ch). Ch 1, turn. 32nd row: Same as 4th row (69 sts). Turn. Straight sides (not diagonal) should now measure about 5½ inches (8 ridges made). Holding piece with ridges on top, and the starting point to the left, mark the side toward you as bottom of strip.
Hereafter keep width of strip uniform (5½ inches), by working as follows: 1st row: Ch 3, turn. Inc. 2 d c as before, d c in next 65 sts; make d c in each of last 3 sts, holding back on hook the last loop of each d c, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (2 d c decreased—69 sts). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * Insert hook in 1st st, draw loop through, insert hook in next st, draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (1 s c decreased). Repeat from * once more. S c in next 63 sts, 2 s c in each of last 2 sts (69 sts). Ch 4, turn. Now make a ridge as before (2 rows to a ridge). Repeat the last 4 rows (there will be 69 sts in each ridge) until left edge of strip measures 103 inches, ending with a ridge. Ch 3, turn. Work decreases at both ends of each d c-row and s c-row to correspond with increases made at beginning of strip (no decreases on the 2 ridge rows) until 9 d c remain. Work a ridge as before. Ch 3, turn; d c in each st across, holding back on hook the last loop of each d c; thread over and draw through all loops on hook. Ch 1 to fasten. Break off. This completes first strip.

SECOND STRIP … Work as for first strip until 8th ridge is made and each straight side (not diagonal) measures about 5½ inches. Holding piece with ridges on top and the starting point to the right, mark the side toward you as bottom of strip. Hereafter work as for first strip, but make decreases where increases were made before, and vice versa (69 sts in each ridge) until right edge of strip measures 103 inches. Shape end of strip as before.
Make necessary number of strips, and sew together with neat over-and-over stitches, alternating strips and matching rows so as to keep continuity of chevron design (see illustration). Sew ball fringe along 2 long sides of spread and 1 short side. Block to measurements given.
