DIAMONDS (1 on chart)—With Scarlet A, ch 4, * yarn over, draw up a loop (about 1/2 inch) in 4th st from hook; repeat from * twice, yarn over and through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 (bean st), 1 d c in same st. 2nd row: ch 3, turn, work a bean st in first space (the space between the d c and the bean st of row below) 1 bean st in next space, 1 d c in same space. 3rd row: ch 3, turn, work a bean st in each space, end with 1 d c in same space as last bean st. Repeat last row, with 1 bean st more in each row, until 6 rows from beginning; break off.

Join scarlet B in last st and work 6 rows as before; break off. Join scarlet C and work 3 more rows (15 bean sts). This is half of diamond.

First dec. row: ch 3, turn, skip first space, 1 bean st in each space to within 1 space of end, 1 d c in last space (14 bean sts). Repeat last row twice, break off. Join garnet D and work 6 rows as before, break off. Join garnet E and work 5 more rows, turn, work 1 s c in 2nd space and fasten off. Each diamond should measure 12 ½ ins. in length and 7 ½ ins. in width. Make 71 of these diamonds.

HALF DIAMONDS (2 on bottom of chart)—Follow directions for the first 15 rows of diamond (1). Fasten off. Make 7 of these half diamonds (2).

HALF DIAMONDS (3 on top of chart)—With scarlet C ch 30 sts. 1 bean st in 4th st from hook. * skip 1 st on ch. 1 bean st in next st; repeat from *, end 1 d c in same st as last bean st (14 bean sts). Finish as for diamond (1), beginning with row after first dec. row. Make 7 of these half diamonds (3).

HALF DIAMONDS (4 on each side of chart)—With scarlet A ch 4, 1 bean st and 1 d c in 4th st from hook. 2nd row: ch 3, turn, skip first space, 1 bean st and 1 d c in next space. 3rd row: ch 3, turn, 1 bean st in each space, end 1 d c in same st as last bean st. 4th row: ch 3, turn, skip first space, finish row; repeat last 2 rows once, break off. Join scarlet B and continue as before (with 1 bean st more in every 2nd row) for 6 rows, break off. Join scarlet C and work 3 more rows (8 bean sts). 16th row: ch 3, turn, skip first space, work to within 1 space of end. 1 d c in last space. 17th row: ch 3, turn, skip first space, finish row. 18th row: same as 16th row, break off. Join Garnet D and repeat 17th and 18th row 3 times, break off. Join garnet E and work 5 more rows, turn, 1 s c in 2nd space, fasten off. Make 12 of these half diamonds (4).

CRISS-CROSS JOINING—Beginning at lower right hand corner place a half diamond (4) with light end up, and a half diamond (2) to the left of it (see chart). Fasten garnet E in last st of 4 and draw up a loop, insert hook downward in first row of 2, keeping yarn underneath of work, draw up a loop through 2 and loop on hook, * insert hook downward in next row of 4 and draw up loop through 4 and loop on hook, insert hook in next row of 2 and draw up loop through 2 and loop on hook; repeat from * to point of 2, place a diamond (1), with dark point meeting light point of 2, alongside upper part of 4 (see chart) and continue the criss-cross joining as before, taking care to avoid forming a hole when joining points, until there are 6 half diamonds (4) at each side, 7 half diamonds (2) at lower end, and 7 half diamonds (3) at upper end of afghan.

EDGING—With garnet E and working from right side, work 1 s c in space before a corner; † ch 1, 1 s c in corner st, ch 1, 1 s c in same st, * ch 1, 1 s c in next space; repeat from * to next corner, repeat from † 3 times, join with a slip st in next s c. 2nd round: ch 1, skip 1 space, * a bean st in corner space, ch 3, 1 s c in s c (the eye) of bean st just made; repeat from * twice (a shell). Skip 1 space, 1 s c in next space, * skip 1 space, a shell in next space, skip 1 space, 1 s c in next space; repeat from last * to end of round, working a shell in space at each corner. Join with a slip st in first s c. Fasten off.
