SQUARES—With first color, ch 5, join with a slip st; ch 3, 2 d c in ring, ch 2, 3 d c in ring, ch 2, 3 d c in ring, ch 2, 3 d c in ring, ch 2, join with a slip st to top of chain 3 at beginning of round; fasten off. 2nd round: with 2nd color, work 3 d c in space made by chain 2 in round below, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c, ch 1, * 3 d c in next space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c, ch 1; repeat from * to end of round and fasten off. 3rd round: with 3rd color, work 3 d c in a corner space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c, ch 1, 3 d c in next space, ch 1, 3 d c in next corner space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c; continue in this way to end of round and fasten off. 4th round: with 4th color, work 3 d c in first corner space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c, ch 1, 3 d c in next space, ch 1, 3 d c in next space, ch 1, 3 d c in next corner space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space; continue in this way to end of round and fasten off. 5th round: with black, work 3 d c in corner space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space, ch 1, 3 d c in next space, ch 1, 3 d c in next space, ch 1, 3 d c in next space, ch 1, 3 d c in next corner space, ch 2, 3 d c in same space as last 3 d c; continue in this way to end of round and fasten off. Sew squares together with an overhand stitch in black, arranging them as indicated by numbers on chart. Take care that seams do not bind and that ends of squares meet exactly.

EDGING —With black work a final round as follows: 3 d c in a space on edge, * ch 3, 1 s c in top of last d c, 3 d c in next space; repeat from * around entire afghan; darn in all ends.
