Crocheted Jacket and Cap Pattern

Directions are for 6-month size. Changes for 1-year size are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
NOMOTTA Non-Shrink, Mothproof Baby Wool or Nylon
3 1-oz balls White
2 1-oz balls Contrasting Color (CC)
plastic crochet hook size 3
4 small pearl buttons

GAUGE: 6½ sc = 1 inch; 6 rows = 1 inch
6½ h dc = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH FOR YOKE: Work in single crochet (sc) going into back loop only.

PATTERN STITCH FOR BODY: Work in Half Double Cro­chet (H dc) going into hack loop only.

JACKET

NOTE: Jacket is worked from side to side. There are 4 rows of White and 2 rows of CC. Carry color not in use loosely along edge.

RIGHT FRONT: Row 1: With White, ch 58 (62). Starting at neck edge, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 19 (21) chs (yoke), 1 h dc in each of remaining 37 (39) chs (body). Ch 2, turn. Row 2: Work 1 h dc in each of next 37 (39) sts, 1 sc in each of next 20 (22) sts. Ch 1, turn. Repeat these 2 rows, working 4 rows of White and 2 rows of CC until there are 4 (5) stripes of each color, end at neck edge. Break yarn.

Shape Armhole: Attach White on 21st (23rd) stitch from neck edge (beginning of body) and work 4 (6) rows across body-sts only, end at armhole edge. Place a marker in center of last stripe to indicate right underarm edge. Do not break yarn.

BACK: With White (CC), ch 21 (23) for back armhole. With CC (White), work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of remaining 19 (21) chains. Now, work across body sts and continue in striped pattern until there are 7(8) White stripes and 8 (7) CC stripes.

Left Armhole and Left Front: Work to correspond with Right Armhole and Right Front.

SLEEVES: With White, ch 40 (44). Starting at underarm seam, work 1 h dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each of next 27 (29) chs, then work 1 sc in each of remaining 10 (12) chains for cuff. Ch 1, turn. Working in striped pattern, keep the 10 (12) cuff sts in sc and remaining part of sleeve in h dc increasing 1 stitch at end of every h dc row (6) times for cap of sleeve; there should be 2 White stripes and 1 (2) CC stripes.

Work straight until there are 3 (4) White stripes and 3 (4) CC stripes. Now, work other half of sleeve to corre­spond, decreasing 1 stitch at same edge as increased, end with White stripe. Break yarn.

FINISHING: Press lightly. Join shoul­ders across 2 White and 2 CC stripes, leaving remaining stripes of each color for neck, sew seams. Work 1 row of sc around neck and along front edges work­ing 4 Buttonloops on right front as follows: *Ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts; repeat from * 3 times more.

CAP

With White, ch 29 (31). Starting at top edge of back seam, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 7(8) chains (top section), work 1 h dc in each of remaining 20 (21) chains. Work in striped pattern same as for Jacket until there are 5 (7) rows, end with h dc section.

Earlap: Ch 10, work 1 h dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each of next 7 chains, continue in pattern across row. Complete White (CC) stripe and work 1 more CC (White) stripe (this completes one earlap). Leaving earlap sts free, continue to work across cap working 4 White stripes and 3 (4) CC stripes (front). Work 2nd earlap to correspond with first earlap. Work remainder of back section to correspond with first sec­tion, then 1 more CC stripe.

FINISHING: Sew back seam. Gather top of crown and lower edge of each earlap firmly, rounding out edge of earlap. Chin Strap: With White, ch 20. Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 10 chains, skip 2 chains, 1 sc in each of the next 3 chains (buttonhole), skip 2 chains, 1 sc in last ch (2nd buttonhole). Working on other side of foundation chain, work 1 sc in each ch and 2 sc in each (ch-2) space. Break yarn. Sew to end of one earlap. Pompon: Wind both color yarns around 2 fingers about 40 times. Slip yarn off fingers and tie tightly around center. Trim into ball and attach.
