Perfectionism in a spread, for it's at home in practically every type room. The large squares have a smart, austere simplicity ... but the cockle shells that blithely round the corners give it a lighthearted theme.

MATERIALS:

SINGLE SIZE
CLARK'S O.N.T. "BRITA-SHEEN"
30 balls.
DOUBLE SIZE
CLARK'S O.N.T. "BRITA-SHEEN"
38 balls.

Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

GAUGE: Each block measures about 6 inches square before blocking. For a single size spread about 72 x 105 inches, make 11 x 16 blocks. For a double size spread about 90 x 105 inches, make 14 x 16 blocks.

FIRST BLOCK ... Starting at center, ch 8. Join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 3 d c in ring, (ch 4, 4 d c in ring) 3 times; ch 4, sl st in top of ch-3 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, * d c in next d c, d c in each d c to sp; in sp make 3 d c, ch 4 and 3 d c (corner). Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in top of ch-3. 3rd, 4th and 5th rnds: Repeat 2nd rnd. 6th rnd: Ch 3, d c in next 3 d c, ch 4, skip 4 d c, d c in next 4 d c, * ch 4, in corner sp make 3 d c, ch 4 and 3 d c; (ch 4, skip 4 d c, d c in next 4 d c) 3 times. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 4, sl st in top of ch-3. 7th rnd: Sl st in next 3 d c, sl st in sp, ch 3, 3 d c in same sp, ch 4, skip 4 d c, 4 d c in next sp, * ch 4, in corner sp make 3 d c, ch 4 and 3 d c; (ch 4, 4 d c in next sp) 4 times. Repeat from * around, ending as before. 8th rnd: Sl st in next 3 d c and in next sp, ch 3, 3 d c in same sp, ch 4, 4 d c in next sp, * ch 4, in corner sp make 3 d c, ch 4 and 3 d c, (ch 4, 4 d c in next sp) 5 times. Repeat from * around, ending as before. 9th rnd: Ch 3, d c in next 3 d c, ch 4, s c in next 4 d c, * ch 4, in corner sp make 12 d c, (ch 4, s c in next 4 d c, ch 4, d c in next 4 d c) twice; ch 4, s c in next 4 d c. Repeat from * around, ending as before. 10th and 11th rnds: Ch 3, d c in next 3 d c, ch 4, s c in next 4 s c, * ch 4, (d c in next d c, ch 1) 11 times; d c in next d c, (ch 4, s c in next 4 s c, ch 4, d c in next 4 d c) twice; ch 4, s c in next 4 s c. Repeat from * around, ending as before. 12th rnd: Ch 3, d c in next 3 d c, ch 4, s c in next 4 s c, ** ch 4, * s c in next d c, ch 4, s c in 4th ch from hook (a p made); s c in next sp. Repeat from * 10 more times; s c in next d c, p, s c in same place as last s c, (ch 4, s c in next 4 s c, ch 4, d c in next 4 d c) twice; ch 4, s c in next 4 s c. Repeat from ** around, ending as before. Fasten off.
SECOND BLOCK ... Work as for First Block to 11th rnd incl. 12th rnd: Work as for 12th rnd of First Block until 8th p is completed, work s c in next sp, s c in next d c, ch 2, s c in corresponding p of 1st block, ch 2, s c in 2nd ch from joining (thus joining corresponding p's); s c in sp, and continue rnd as for First Block, joining next 3 p's and first 4 p's of next corner to corresponding p's of First Block. Sew corre­sponding d c-scallops with neat over-and-over stitches, as in illustration.
Make necessary number of blocks, joining adjacent sides as Second Block was joined to First, leaving 4 center p's at each corner free. Block to measurements given.
