The Star Fast Flatterer Hat Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" FAST HEAVY CROCHET MERCERIZED COTTON, Article 140
3 balls Chocolate or color of your choice for hat.
Steel crochet hook No. 00.
1 yd. ¼ inch velvet ribbon.
⅝ yd. buckram.
2 snap fasteners.
⅝ yd. lining.
1 yd. fine Gold cording.
1 ornament.

GAUGE: 5 sts = 1 inch. 7 rows = 2 inches.

HAT

Starting at lower edge ch 114, join to form a ring being careful not to twist ch, ch 3 and work 1 d c in each st of ch (114 d c counting the ch 3 as 1 d c), join in 3rd st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: Working in s c and in front loop of sts only, decrease 1 s c at beginning and end of row (to decrease: insert hook in 1st st, pull loop through, insert in next st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), join in 1st s c, ch 3, turn.

3rd Row: Working in back loop of sts only and working in d c, decrease 1 st at beginning and end of row (to decrease: * thread over hook, insert in next st, pull through and work off 2 loops, repeat from * once, thread over and work off all loops at one time), join, ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times but ch 3 to turn last row.

12th Row: Working in front loop of sts only and working in d c, decrease 1 d c at beginning and end of row, join, ch 3,

13th Row: Working in back loop of sts only and working in d c, decrease 1 d c at beginning and end of row, join, ch 3, turn.

Repeat the last 2 rows 7 times (62 sts left), cut thread leaving a length for sewing.

Fold last row in half having joining at side of hat and sew together across top.

Fold on 21st row having the top to inside of hat, and sew to form a ½ inch tuck.

With right side of work toward you attach thread in 1st st at lower edge, work 1 s c in each st (114 s c), ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Working through both loops of sts work 1 s c in each s c, ch 3, turn.

Next Row: Working in d c and through both loops of sts, decrease 1 d c at beginning and end of row, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Working in s c and through both loops of sts, decrease 1 s c at beginning and end of row, ch 3, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows once, cut thread leaving a length for sewing. Sew the 2 short edges together and sew last 6 rows to inside of hat. Make 4 velvet bows. With "star" mercerized sewing thread, sew 1 bow on 5th row from lower edge of hat sewing over the joining (this is side of hat). Fold top down about 3 rows and tack in position over the joining placing a bow where tacked. Turn over and tack another fold between top and lower bow and finish with bow as illustrated. Sew 4th bow on opposite side of hat to inside of top tuck. Sew gold cording over the 3 bows as illustrated.
