MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN
, 1 ball of any color.
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, 2 skeins of a contrasting color.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 6.
A bone ring.

Starting at top, ch 12 (to measure about 1 ¼ inches). 1st row: 6 tr in 4th ch from hook, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch (shell made), skip 3 ch, 7 tr in next ch (another shell made). Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: 6 tr at base of turning ch, sc in center tr of shell (shell increased), 7 tr in next sc, sc in center tr of next shell (another shell made), 7 tr in top st of turning ch (another shell in-creased). Ch 4, turn. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Increase a shell, * sc in center st of next shell, shell in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with a shell in top st of turning ch. Ch 4, turn. 6th row: 3 tr at base of turning ch, sc in center of next shell (half shell made), make shells and sc's across as before, ending with a half shell. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: Sc in 1st tr and work shells and sc's across, ending with sc in top st of turning ch. Ch 4, turn. 8th row: 6 tr in sc (at base of turning ch), sc in center tr of next shell and make shells and sc's across, ending with 7 tr in last sc. Ch 4, turn.

9th to 18th rows incl: Repeat 6th and 7th rows alternately 5 times. 19th row: Same as 8th row. 20th to 23rd rows incl: Repeat 6th and 7th rows alternately twice. 24th, 25th and 26th rows: Sl st to center tr of next shell, sc in center tr and work shells and sc's across, ending with sc in center tr of last shell. Turn. 27th row: Sl st to center tr of next shell, * sc in center tr, h dc in next 2 tr, dc in next tr, the following sc and the next tr, h dc in next 2 tr. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in center tr of last shell, sl st in next st. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this.

CLAPPER (Make 2) . . . Starting at center with Six Strand Embroidery Floss, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rnds. Hereafter pick up only back loop of each st. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. Now work sc in each st around, increasing as necessary to keep work flat until piece measures 1 inch in diameter—to inc an sc, make 2 sc in 1 sc. Now ch 10, sc in 2nd and each following ch across, sc in next sc, sl st in next sc. Fasten off.

CORD . . . Measure off 4 lengths of Six Strand Embroidery Floss, each 3 yards long. Twist these strands tightly, then double the twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction.

FINISHING . . . Sew a clapper on each crocheted piece about ½ inch above center of lower edge. Sew cord above clapper in a curve corresponding with curve of lower edge (to simulate lip of bell). Sew edges of crocheted pieces together. Sew cord all around edges. Sew ring at top.
