Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 60, 1 ball of White or Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 14.
A circle of fine handkerchief linen, 3 inches in diameter.

When completed, doily measures about 5½ inches in diameter.

Make a very narrow hem all around edge of linen. 1st rnd: Work a row of s c closely together all around hem, having a number of s c divisible by 5, plus 2. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, * skip 1 s c, d c in next s c, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 3rd rnd: Sl st and s c in 1st sp, ch 5, * d c in next sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around, increasing 1 sp in every 10th sp (to increase, make d c, ch 2 and d c in same sp). Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 4th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd, but increasing in every 9th sp (100 sps). 5th rnd: S c in 1st sp, * ch 5, s c in next sp, ch 5, s c in next sp, ch 5, s c in next sp (3 loops made), ch 7, skip 1 sp, s c in next sp. Repeat from * around. Ch 7, join with sl st to 1st s c made (20 ch-7 loops). 6th rnd: Sl st to center of 1st loop, s c in loop, * ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 3, 8 s c in ch-7 loop, ch 3, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending rnd with ch 3, sl st in 1st s c made, turn. 7th rnd: Sl st in each of next 2 ch, turn. S c in same ch-3 loop, * ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in ch-3 loop, ch 7, s c in next ch-3 loop. Repeat from * around, ending rnd with ch 7, sl st in 1st s c made. 8th, 9th and 10th rnds: Repeat 6th, 7th and 6th rnds. 11th rnd: Same as 7th rnd, but ch 8 instead of ch 7. 12th, 13th and 14th rnds: Same as 6th, 11th and 6th rnds. 15th rnd: Same as 7th rnd, but ch 9 instead of ch 7. 16th rnd: Sl st to center of 1st loop, * ch 6, skip 1 loop, s c in next loop, ch 2; in ch-9 loop work 8 d c with ch-2 between each d c; ch 2, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending rnd with ch 2, sl st in 1st s c made. 17th rnd: Sl st to center of ch-6 loop, ch 3, d c in same loop, * ch 2, d c in 1st sp of 8-d c group, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook (1 p made), d c in same place. Make 1 p and 1 d c over each of next 5 sps; d c, p, d c in next sp; ch 2, 2 d c in next ch-6 loop. Repeat from * around, ending rnd with sl st in 3rd st of ch-3 first made. Break off.
