Towel Edging & Pot Holder 2 Pattern

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MER­CERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 1 ball each of No. 126 Spanish Red and No. 61-D Nu-Ecru; and
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 1 ball each of No. 126 Spanish Red, No. 61-D Nu-Ecru and No. 12 Black.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 2/0 (double zero) and No. 7.

A red dish towel ... A bone ring.

GAUGE: "Speed-Cro-Sheen" and No. 2/0 hook-6 sc make 1 inch; 4 rows of one color make 1 inch.

POT HOLDER (Use "Speed-Cro-Sheen" and No. 2/0 hook) ... Starting at lower edge with Spanish Red, ch 41. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Drop Red. 2nd row: Attach Nu-Ecru to first ch at opposite side of starting chain, sc in same place and in each ch across, ch 1, do not turn. Drop Nu-Ecru. Always change color at end of row. 3rd row: Pick up Red, insert hook in back loop of first sc on Red row and in front loop of correspond­ing sc on Nu-Ecru row, thread over and draw loop through, thread over and complete an sc, * make an sc through back loop of next sc and front loop of corresponding sc on Nu-Ecru row. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Drop Red. 4th row: Pick up Ecru, make an sc through free loop of first Ecru sc and front loop of corresponding Red sc, * make an sc through front loop of next Ecru sc and front loop of corresponding Red sc. Repeat from * across, ch 1. Drop Ecru, do not turn. 5th row: Pick up Red, make an sc through back loop of first Ecru sc and in free loop of corresponding Red sc. Continue in pattern across row. Ch 1, turn. Drop Red. 6th row: Pick up Ecru and make an sc through back loop of first Red sc and in free loop of corresponding Ecru sc. Com­plete row in pattern, ch 1, do not turn. Drop Ecru. 7th row: Pick up Red, make an sc through free loop of first Red sc and in front loop of corresponding Ecru sc. Complete row in pattern. Ch 1, turn. Drop Red. Repeat 4th to 7th rows incl until piece is square, ending with 4th row. Break off Ecru.

BORDER ... 1st rnd: With Red make an sc through both loops of first Ecru sc and in free loop of cor­responding Red sc, * make an sc through both loops of next Ecru sc and in free loop of corresponding Red sc. Repeat from * across, making sc, ch 1 and sc in last sc, sc closely around remaining 3 sides. Join and break off. 2nd rnd: With Red side facing, using No. 7 hook, attach Nu-Ecru "Knit-Cro-Sheen" to any corner, ch 3, dc in same place, * make 52 dc evenly across side, increasing if necessary—to inc 1 dc, make 2 dc in 1 dc—4 dc in next corner sc. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc in same place as starting ch-3. Join with a sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3. Break off. 3rd rnd: Attach Spanish Red "Knit-Cro-Sheen" to same place where sl st was made, 2 sc in same st (an inc), sc in next dc, * dc around bar of next dc (raised dc made), sc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * across to the 4 corner dc, raised dc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc, sc and raised dc in next dc (corner inc), sc in next 3 dc. Work along remaining 3 sides in same manner. Join and break off. 4th rnd: Attach Black "Knit-Cro- Sheen" to any raised dc, sc in same place, sc in next sc, * make a raised dc in the 2nd dc following raised dc of previous rnd, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * around, increasing 2 sts at each corner as before. Join and break off. With Black sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.

TOWEL EDGING (Make 2) ... Starting with Ecru "Knit-Cro-Sheen" and No. 7 hook, make a chain slightly longer than short edge of towel. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across, having a number of dc divisible by 4 and 3 more at end of row (turning ch-3 counts as 1 dc). Break off. Do not turn. 2nd row: Attach Spanish Red "Knit-Cro-Sheen" to top of ch-3 at beginning of row, sc in same place, sc in next 2 dc, * make a dc around the bar of next dc, sc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * across. Break off. 3rd row: Attach Black to first sc on 2nd row, sc in same place, * make a raised dc in corresponding dc of first row, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 sc, raised dc and sc in last sc. Break off 4th row: Attach Ecru at beginning of row, sc in next 3 sts,* make a raised dc in corresponding raised dc of 2nd row, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across. Break off. 5th row: Attach Red at beginning of row, sc in first sc, * raised dc in corresponding raised dc of 3rd row, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 sc, raised dc and sc in last sc. Break off. 6th row: Attach Black at beginning of row, sc in first 3 sts, * raised dc in raised dc of 4th row, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across. Do not break off. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: Sc in first sc and in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 8th row: Sc in first 3 sc, * raised dc in raised dc of 6th row, sc in next 3 sc. Repeat from * across. Break off. Sew Edgings neatly to towel.
