Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, Size 30, White, Ecru, or any desired Boilfast Color, or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, Size 8. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8, 9, or 10.

To begin, ch 20, and join with sl st to form ring. 1st row: 19 s c in ring, ch 4, turn. 2nd row: * Skip 1 s c, 1 d c in next s c, ch 1, and repeat from * to end of row (9 sps in all). Ch 20, turn. 3rd row: Sl st in 1st sp of 9 sps, ch 1, turn, 15 s c over ch loop, * ch 10, turn, sl st in next sp, ch 1, turn, 15 s c over ch-10 just made, and repeat from * 7 more times (9 ribs in all). Ch 4 (do not turn). 4th row: 1 d c in sp between 1 st and 2nd ribs, * ch 1, 1 d c in next sp, ch 1, 1 d c in same sp, and repeat from * to end of row (17 sps in all). Ch 4, turn. 5th row: 1 s c in 1st sp (1 p made), * 1 s c in next sp, ch 4, 1 s c in same sp, and repeat from * to end of row (17 p's in all), ch 12, sl st into the end sp at the foot of the ribs (thus forming the foundation ch for the next motif), ch 1, turn. 6th row: 19 s c over ch-12 just made, ch 4, turn. 7th row: Same as 2nd row, ch 20, turn. 8th row: Same as 3rd row. 9th row: Same as 4th row. 10th row: Same as 5th row. 11th row: Same as 6th row. 12th row: Make 9 sps same as for 2nd row, then ch 1, 1 s c in 1st p of next motif, ch 2, 1 s c in next p, ch 2, 1 s c in next p; then ch 10, turn. Repeat from beginning of 8th row for length desired, and break off thread.

TO MAKE A CORNER. Attach thread to 5th p (counting from inner end of motif). 1st row: Ch 12, sl st into end sp at the foot of the ribs of last motif made (thus forming the foundation ch for the next motif and changing its position). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 19 s c over ch-12 just made, ch 4, turn. 3rd row: Make 9 sps, same as for 2nd row; then skip 3 s c on last rib of adjacent motif (last motif made), and make 1 s c in each of the following 5 s c of same rib, ch 10, turn. Continue pattern by repeating from beginning of 8th row.
