MATERIALS: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 5 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7.

Chair Back—about 11¼ x 15¾ inches.
Arm Pieces—about 9 x 11¼ inches.

Gauge: Joined motif measures 2¼ inches square.

CHAIR BACK (First Motif) ... 1st rnd: Ch 4; make 2 d c in 1st ch of ch-4, retaining on hook last loop of each d c, thread over and draw through 3 remaining loops, ch 1 tightly (cluster). Repeat from beginning until 4 clusters are made, sl st at base of 1st cluster made. 2nd rnd: Ch 5 (to count as tr), * tr in ch-1 fol­lowing this cluster, ch 5; make 3 d tr (3 times around hook) in same place, retaining on hook last loop of each st; thread over and draw through remaining loops, ch 1 tightly (3-d tr cluster is corner); ch 5 more, tr in same place. Repeat from *, ending with ch 5, join to 5th st of 1st ch-5. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next tr and in 1st st of ch-5, * 5 s c in ch-5 sp, ch 9, 5 s c in next ch-5 sp following cluster, ch 5. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, join to 1st s c. Fasten off.

Second Motif … Like 1st motif to within 3rd rnd. 3rd rnd: Sl st in tr and in next ch, 5 s c in sp, ch 4, drop loop from hook, insert hook in a ch-9 of 1st motif and draw loop through, ch 4, 5 s c in next sp on motif in work, ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert it in corre­sponding ch-5 loop, draw loop through, ch 2, 5 s c in next sp, ch 4, drop loop from hook, insert it in corre­sponding ch-9, draw loop through, ch 4, 5 s c in next sp. Complete rnd as for 1st motif. Make 5 x 7 motifs, joining at all adjacent loops.

ARM PIECES … Make 4 x 5 motifs, joining as for chair back.
