MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of Cream … J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 1 ball each of Red and Black … Steel Crochet Hook No. 7 … 5 bone rings … Scraps of red and black felt … These materials are sufficient for a pot holder case and a set of 4 pot holders.

POT HOLDER (Make 4) … Starting at one side with Cream, ch 48 (to measure about 5½ inches). 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each dc and in top st of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Dc in 2nd sc and in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece is square, ending with the 3rd row. Do not break off but work in rnds along outer edges as follows: 1st rnd: Sc closely all around, sl st in 1st sc. Drop Cream. 2nd rnd: Attach Red and sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in each corner sc. Join and break off. 3rd rnd: Pick up Cream and work as for 2nd rnd. 4th rnd: Attach Black and work as for 2nd rnd. 5th rnd: Attach Cream and work as for 2nd rnd.
     Cut a spade and a club of the black felt (to measure about 3½ inches across at widest points) and sew one on each of 2 pot holders. Cut a diamond and a heart of the red felt and sew one to each of remaining 2 pot holders. Sew a bone ring on each pot holder.

PADDING … Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller, and lining material slightly larger, than crocheted piece. Place padding between crocheted piece and lining. Turn under edges of lining and sew to edges of crocheted piece with neat over-and-over stitches. For pot holders consisting of 2 crocheted pieces, insert padding between crochet and sew up edges.

POT HOLDER CASE … With Cream, ch 88 (to measure about 10 inches) and work as for pot holders until piece measures 7 x 10 inches, ending with a dc row. Now shape edges by working off the 3 end sts as 1 st at both ends of each dc and sc row (4 sts decreased on each row) until all sts are worked off. Work 5 rnds all around outer edges as for pot holders. Fold the lower part of the case in half, sew side edges together and tack at center. Cut a red heart and a club and sew these 2 on the case. Sew on bone ring.
