Remember that you need a crochet thread of a size, texture, lustre, and color or shaded color right for the purpose. The thread should be of a quality to wear so that it will not break and make your work valueless. The color must be Boilfast so that innumerable washings will not fade it. These necessities to good work are found in both Clark's O.N.T. and J. & P. Coats Threads.

Mercerized Crochet is made in sizes 1 to 100 in white, and 1 to 70 in ecru; Boilfast colors in sizes 30 and 50. Size 1 is the coarsest, 100 the finest.

Ch 6, join in a ring. Ch 8, * d c in ring, ch 5, repeat from * until 5 d c have been made in ring, ch 5. Join last ch-5 to 3d st of starting ch of rnd. 6 sps in rnd. 2d rnd: In each sp make 1 s c, 1 half d c, 1 d c, 3 tr, 1 d c, 1 half d c, 1 s c. Join. 3d rnd: Sl st to 1st d c of 1st scallop. * Ch 7, catch in 5th ch from hook for a p, ch 8 and catch for p, ch 2, s c in next d c of same scallop. Make loop with 2 p as before, s c in 1st d c of next scallop, and repeat from *. Join last loop to 1st s c of rnd. 12 loops in rnd. 4th rnd: Sl st to center of 1st loop, working behind p. S c under center of loop, * ch 7, s c under center of next loop. Turn, ch 7, catch where 1st ch-7 started. Ch 3, turn, 9 d c under double ch-7. Ch 3, s c in center of loop where s c after 1st ch-7 was made. Make 2 p loops as in preceding rnd, working s c under center of loops below. Repeat from * around. Catch down last loop in s c with which round started. 4 d c shells in round, always with 2 p loops between shells. 5th rnd: Sl st to top of 1st d c of 1st shell. Work 1 s c in same d c. Work p loops all around catching down in beginning, end, and center of each d c shell, and in each p loop of preceding round. Catch down last loop in s c with which rnd started. 6th rnd: Sl st to center of 1st loop. Over each shell of 4th rnd make same shell and between shells work 4 p loops. Make 2 rnds all p loops, working as instructed for 5th rnd.
