Remember that you need a crochet thread of a size, texture, lustre, and color or shaded color right for the purpose. The thread should be of a quality to wear so that it will not break and make your work valueless. The color must be Boilfast so that innumerable washings will not fade it. These necessities to good work are found in both Clark's O.N.T. and J. & P. Coats Threads.

Mercerized Crochet is made in sizes 1 to 100 in white, and 1 to 70 in ecru; Boilfast colors in sizes 30 and 50. Size 1 is the coarsest, 100 the finest.

In this pattern all rows are begun at the same end. For foundation row make 1 s c in each hole of hemstitching. 2d row: * 1 s c each in 1st 10 s c, ch 12, skip 5 s c, 1 d c each in next 4 s c, ch 12, skip 5 s c, and repeat from *. 3d row: 7 s c over 10 s c, beginning in 3d s c of preceding row and omitting 1 s c at end, ch 12, 4 d c in 1st d c of group of preceding row, ch 3, 4 d c in last d c of same group. Ch 12, repeat from beginning of row. 4th row: 4 s c across center of 7 s c, beginning in 3d s c and omitting 1 s c at end. Ch 12, 1 d c each in next 4 d c, ch 3, 4 d c in 3-ch sp of preceding row, ch 3, 4 d c on 4 d c, ch 12, repeat from beginning of row. 5th row: 2 s c on 4 s c, ch 12, 4 d c on 4 d c, ch 3, 4 d c in sp, ch 3, 4 d c in next sp, ch 3, 4 d c on d c. Ch 12, repeat from beginning of row. 6th row: 1 s c over 2 s c, ch 12, 4 d c over 4 d c, ch 3, 4 d c over next 4 d c, ch 3, 4 d c in sp, ch 3, 4 d c on 4 d c, ch 4, 4 d c on 4 d c. Ch 12, repeat. 7th row: 1 d c in 1st d c, ch 4, 1 half d c in ch first made (to form p). Make 1 d c each in 1st and last d c of each bl, and between scallops in the 4th ch from each scallop, always making p between d c.
