MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 2 balls of No. 126 Span­ish Red; 1 ball of White and a few yards of No. 70 Blue Jewel.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

A doll 8 inches tall, chest 4 ½ inches.

SKIRT ... Starting at bottom with Spanish Red, make a chain 50 inches long. 1st row: Tr in 5th ch from hook and in next 2 ch (bl made), * ch 4, skip 4 ch, tr in next 4 ch (another bl made). Repeat from * across until there are 36 bls, ch 4. Break off. Cut off remaining chain, leaving 4 chains at end of row. 2nd row: At­tach White to starting chain at beginning of row, * ch 4, make tr in next 4 ch on foundation chain (this makes checkerboard design). Repeat from * across, ending with tr in last 4 ch. Break off. 3rd row: Attach White to same place at beginning of row, ch 4, working over previous White chain make tr in next 3 tr, * ch 4, skip next 4 tr, working over previous White chain make tr in next 4 tr. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 4. Break off. 4th row: Attach Spanish Red to starting chain at begin­ning of row, * ch 4, working over previous Red chain make tr in next 4 tr. Repeat from * across ending with tr in last 4 tr. Break off. 5th row: Attach Spanish Red to same place at beginning of row and work as for 3rd row, making Red blocks over White blocks. 6th row: Attach White to starting chain at beginning of row and work as for 4th row, mak­ing White blocks over Red blocks. Work in pattern until piece measures 6 inches. Break off. Sew narrow ends together leaving a 1 ½ inch opening at top.

WAISTBAND ... 1st row: Attach Spanish Red to first st at top of skirt, sc in same place, * work off next 2 sc as 1 sc (1 sc decreased). Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: Sc in first sc, * work off next 2 sc as 1 sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each sc across, sc closely across back opening, sl st in first sc. Break off. Sew a hook and eye to opening.

BLOUSE ... Starting at neck with White, ch 28. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, * dc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Dc in first dc, * dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn (91 dc on 4th row). 5th row: Skip first dc, dc in next 9 dc, skip 24 dc for armhole, dc in next 23 dc across front, skip next 24 dc for other armhole, dc in each remaining dc and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across, decreasing 8 dc evenly across—to dec 1 dc, work off 2 dc as 1 dc. Break off.

SLEEVE ... 1st rnd: Attach thread at armhole, dc closely around, decreas­ing 3 dc across underarm. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, decreasing 8 dc evenly around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, decreasing 6 dc evenly around. Join. 5th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Attach thread to other armhole and complete other sleeve to correspond. Attach thread to first st at neck, sc in same place, * ch 3, skip 1 st, sc in next st. Re­peat from * across. Break off. Sew 2 small snap fasteners to back.

APRON ... With White, make a chain 18 inches long. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off. 2nd row: Mark off 11 sts on each side of center st. At­tach thread to first dc marked, ch 3, dc in each dc across to next marker. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 dc in first dc, 3 dc in each dc across, 3 dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Repeat last row until piece measures 3 ¼ inches. Next row: Skip first dc, dc in back loop of each dc across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. (Frill to be worked later across front loops of row.) Following row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Re­peat last row until piece measures 4 ¾ inches in all. At end of last row, ch 1, turn.

BOTTOM EDGING ... 1st row: Sc in each dc across and in top of turning chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in first sc, * ch 3, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Turn. 3rd row: Sl st in first loop, sc in same loop, * ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Ch 6, turn. 4th row: Tr in first loop, in each loop across make tr, ch 2 and tr. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Sc in first sp, * ch 3, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across. Turn. 6th row: Repeat 3rd row. Break off.

FRILL ... 1st row: Attach White to first loop on dc row marked for frill, sc in same place, * ch 5, skip 2 sts, sc in next st. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: Sc in first loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Break off. Turn. 3rd row: Attach Blue Jewel to first sc, ch 5, dc in same sc, * ch 1, hold­ing back on hook the last loop of each dc, make dc in next 2 loops, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (joint-dc made), ch 1, in next sc make dc, ch 2 and dc. Re­peat from * across, ending with dc, ch 2 and dc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in first dc, * sc in next sp, sc in next dc, ch 7, skip next joint-dc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in 3rd ch of starting ch-5. Break off.

COLLAR ... Starting at back with Blue Jewel, ch 2. 1st row: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in first sc (1 sc increased), sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd to 13th rows incl: Sc in each sc across, increasing 1 sc at each end of row. Ch 1, turn.

To Shape Front: 1st row: Dec 1 sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd to 14th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. Dec 1 sc at beginning of each row until 3 sc remain. Work off last 3 sc as 1 sc. Break off. Attach thread to opposite side and work other front to cor­respond. Sew snap fastener in place.

KERCHIEF ... Starting with Spanish Red, work as for Collar until 13 rows have been completed. 14th to 23rd rows incl: Continue increasing 1 sc at both ends of each row. Break off at end of 23rd row. Sew around head to form kerchief. Sew a small ring to each side of kerchief to represent earrings.

BAG ... Starting at bottom with Spanish Red, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd and 4th rnds: Inc 6 sc evenly around. 5th to 9th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around. 10th rnd: Sl st in next sc, ch 4, * skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. With Spanish Red make a chain 3 inches long. Lace through sps on bag and fasten ends securely. Stuff bag firmly with Red thread. Attach chain to doll's arm.
