Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 2 balls of any color (3 balls will make 2 pot holders).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5 or 6.
A bone ring.

Starting at center, ch 8, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 5, * d c in ring, ch 2. Repeat from * 6 more times. Join to 3rd st of ch-5 first made (8 sps). 2nd rnd: Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 d c in same sp, ch 2, * 3 d c in next sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, d c in same place as sl st, * d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, ch 2, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, d c in same place as sl st, * d c in next 3 d c, 2 d c in next d c, ch 2, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2. Join. 5th rnd: Ch 3, d c in same place as sl st, * d c in next 5 d c, 2 d c in next d c, ch 3, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3. Join. 6th rnd: Sl st in next d c, ch 3, * d c in next 6 d c, ch 3, s c in ch-3 sp, ch 3, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3. Join. 7th rnd: Sl st in next d c, ch 3, * d c in next 4 d c, ch 4, s c in ch-3 sp, s c in next s c, s c in next ch-3 sp, ch 4, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c. Repeat from * around. Join. 8th rnd: Sl st in next d c, ch 3, * d c in next 2 d c, ch 5, s c in ch-4 sp, s c in next 3 s c, s c in next sp, ch 5, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5. Join. 9th rnd: Sl st in next d c, ch 3, 2 d c in same place as sl st, holding back the last loop of each d c on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (a 3-d c cluster—counting ch-3 as 1 d c); * ch 6, s c in ch-5 loop, s c in next 5 s c, s c in next loop, ch 6, skip 1 d c, 3-d c cluster in next d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 6, sl st in tip of 1st cluster. 10th rnd: S c in same place as sl st, ** ch 5, skip 3 s c, tr in next s c, * ch 2, tr in same s c. Repeat from * 2 more times, ch 5, s c in tip of 1 next cluster. Repeat from ** around, ending with ch 5. Join. 11th rnd: Ch 6, d c in same place as sl st, * ch 3, 4 s c in ch-5 loop, s c in ch-2 sp, ch 3; in next sp make d c, ch 3, d c; ch 3, s c in next sp, 4 s c in next loop, ch 3; in next s c make d c, ch 3, d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3. Join to 3rd st of ch-6. 12th rnd: Sl st in sp, ch 6, d c in same sp, * ch 3, s c in next sp, ch 2, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c, ch 2, s c in next sp, ch 3; in next sp (between d c's) make d c, ch 3, d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, sl st in 3rd st of ch-6 first made. Fasten off. Make another piece like this.
   Make circular pad 6½ inches in diameter. Cover pad with any colorful material. Sew crocheted pieces to pad. Sew bone ring at top.
