Materials Required—The following AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY Products:

11" DOLLS. "STAR" PEARL COTTON Size 5, 60-yd. Balls. 4 Balls White, 3 Balls Red, 2 Balls Medium Blue, 1 Ball each of Light Blue, Pink and Brown. "STAR" SIX STRAND MERCERIZED EMBROIDERY COTTON, 2 Skeins Brown. Steel Crochet Hook No. 8.

16" DOLLS. "DAWN" WORSTED FLOSS, 1-oz. Balls. 2 Balls each of Red and White, 1 Ball each of Pink, Light and Medium Blue. 2 Balls of "SILLATEEN SANSIL" Brown (this is used double for Jack's Wig and Shoes). "STAR" SIX STRAND MERCERIZED EMBROIDERY COTTON, 4 Skeins Brown and 1 Skein each of Red and Black will be sufficient for embroidering all faces. Bone Crochet Hook No. 1.

Cotton or Kapok for filling.

JACK

SHOES. With Brown ch 30, join to form a ring, ch 1 and work 1 s c in 1st 9 sts of ch, ch 1, turn and work 7 more rows of s c, then work 1 row of s c decreasing 1 st each side. 10th Row—Ch 1, 1 s c in each s c, 1 s c in each row at side, skip 1 st at instep, work s c on each remaining st of ch skipping last st at instep, 1 s c in each row of s c on other side, join and work 2 more rows of s c decreasing 1 st at each side of instep. Work 4 rows even, break thread and sew seam of sole. Attach Brown at center back of heel, ch 3 and work 25 d c around shoe, join, ch 3 and work 1 more row of d c, break thread. Attach Medium Blue and work 11 rows of d c working the 1st row only in the back loop of sts, break thread and with Medium Blue work a row of d c in free loop of last row of Brown. Place a piece of shaped cardboard in the soles of feet and stuff feet and legs. Place side centers of legs together and with Medium Blue, starting at front, crochet legs together with 6 s c working through both loops of sts on each leg, do not break thread. Ch 3 and working through both loops, work a row of d c around outside of legs, join. 2nd Row—Ch 3, work a row of d c, increasing 4 sts in back of each leg, join. Ch 3 and work 5 more rows, break thread. With Light Blue work a row of d c into back loops of sts then work 7 rows working into both loops. 16th Row—Ch 3, * 1 d c, decrease 1 st, 2 d c, decrease one st, repeat from * all around. 17th Row—Decrease every other st then work 1 row even, break thread. Mark the 15 center sts in front of the last row of Medium Blue and beginning in the first st, work a row of d c in free loops of row, join and on the 15 center sts work 6 rows of d c, ch 1, turn and work 1 s c in each of the 1st 2 d c, ch 1, turn and continue rows of s c until strap meets overalls in the back. Work a similar strap on the other side.

HANDS AND ARMS. With White, ch 20, join, ch 1 and work 19 s c on ch, join. Ch 1 and work 3 more rows of s c.

NEXT ROW START THUMB. Ch 1, work 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, join in ch 1. Ch 1 and work 3 rounds of s c. Next Row—Decrease 2 sts, break thread and sew tip of thumb. Attach thread to side of thumb, ch 1 and work 12 s c around remaining sts, join and work 5 more rows of s c. Next Row—Decrease 4 sts, break thread and sew tip of hand.

ARMS. Attach Light Blue at wrist above thumb, ch 3 and work 17 d c around wrist, join, ch 3 and work 7 more rows of d c. 9th to 12th Rows—11 d c, 1 s d c, 4 s c, 1 s d c, join, break thread. In the 2nd arm work the last 4 rows as follows: 1 s d c, 4 s c, 1 s d c, 11 d c. Stuff arms and body.

HEAD. With White, ch 7, join. Ch 1 and work 15 s c into ring. Join each row and start each row with ch 1. 2nd Row—1 s c in each s c. 3rd Row—Increase in every other st. Work 1 row even. Repeat last 2 rows twice increasing if necessary to 53 sts in last row. Work 10 rows even. 19th Row—1 s c in each of the next 9 sts, decrease one st, 1 s c in each of the next 9 sts, decrease one st, 1 s c in each of the next 9 sts, place a marker and work remaining sts for face. Work 3 rows even. 23rd Row—1 s c in each of the next 11 sts, decrease one st, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, decrease one st, 1 s c in each of the next 10 sts, decrease one st, 1 s c in each of the next 16 sts, decrease one st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts. Work 1 row even. 25th Row—1 s c in each of the next 10 sts, decrease 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 10 sts, decrease one st, 1 s c in each of the next 19 sts, decrease one St. Work 1 row even. 27th Row—* 1 s c in next st, decrease one st, repeat from * 6 times, 1 s c in each of the next 8 sts, decrease 2 sts, 1 s c in each remaining st. Work 1 row even, break thread and stuff head. Indicate face with pencil as illustrated and embroider the mouth in Red and remainder of face in Black.

WIG. With Brown, ch 5, join, ch 1 and work 10 s c into ring. 2nd Row—2 s c in each s c. Work 2 rows even. 5th Row—Increase in every other st. Work 3 rows even. 9th Row—Increase in every 5th st. Work 2 rows even.

NEXT ROW STARTS CURLS. Ch 3, turn work and working into back loop of st, s c in same space, * pull up a loop on hook the length of the ch 3 and s c in next st, pull up a loop on hook and s c in same space, repeat from * all around, slipping loops off hook about every 10 sts then slipping last 2 back on hook to use as a gauge for the following loops. Finish row with 2 s c without loops. Ch 1, turn work and work a row of s c in free loops of sts. Repeat the last 2 rows twice and work 1 row of loops working into both loops of sts. Attach wig to head.

CAP. With Medium Blue work the 1st 11 rows of wig and repeat the last 3 rows then turn work and into back loop of st work a row of s c. Tie a Ribbon around Jack's neck.

JILL

SHOES. With White work same as Jack's shoes.

LEG. Work same as Jack's working 2 rows White, two rows of d c in Red and 9 rows in White working the 1st row of White in back loop of st, break thread and with Red work a row of s c in free loop of last row of Red for cuff. With Pink—Join legs and crochet body same as Jack's, working 1st row through back loop only. Work 10 rows Pink, break thread. Attach Pink in free loop of last row in White * ch 3, sl st in next st, repeat from * all around, break thread. With Red work a row of d c then work 1 row into back loop of sts and 3 rows into both loops of sts. Repeat 16th, 17th and 18th rows of body.

SKIRT. Join Red in center back of free loop in 1st row of Red, ch 4, and work 2 tr c in each st, join. Ch 4 and work 3 more rows of tr c even then work * 1 row of s c in White, 1 row of d c in Red. Repeat from *, break thread.

HANDS. Work same as Jack's.

ARMS. With White repeat the first 8 rows of Jack's arms, break thread. With Red repeat 9th to 12th rows, working into back loop of sts in 9th row and both loops in 10th, 11th and 12 rows, break thread. Attach Red in free loop in last row in White * ch 5, sl st in next st, repeat from * all around.

HEAD. Work same as Jack's and embroider face same as Jack's.

HAIR. Take 2 Skeins (4 Skeins for large doll) of Six Strand Embroidery Thread and cut in 12" lengths (18" lengths for large doll), place strands on top of head spreading them to about 1 ½" or 2" and sew to head through the center forming a part in the hair. Tack hair to head at sides about half way down. Braid each side and tie with ribbons. With 2 strands of cotton embroider the bangs.

BONNET. With Red repeat 14 rows of Jack's cap. Next row. SI st across 1st 5 s c * ch 3, 2 d c in same space, skip 2 s c, sl st in next s c, repeat from * 12 times, ch 3, turn, * 2 d c in same space, sl st in ch 3 of next shell, ch 3, repeat from * across row, work 4 rows of shells and work 1 row of shells all around bonnet. Attach ribbon to bonnet and tie under the chin.
