Sparkling Beaded Dutch Cap Pattern

Materials for both hat and bag:

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 3 balls of No. 12-A Blue Sparkle; and
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN" METALLIC, Art. A.64: 5 balls of No. M.68 Skipper Blue.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 2/0 (double zero) and No. 6.
14 strings of Walco round white wood beads, Style No. 7000 ... ¼ yard of blue felt ... 2 black snap fasteners ... ¾ yard cable cord ... 2 wooden tongue depressors.

GAUGE: 11 sc make 2 inches; 6 rows or rnds make 1 inch.

HAT ... Starting at back of Crown with "Speed-Cro- Sheen" and No. 2/0 hook, ch 15. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, making 3 sc in last ch (top of crown). Now, working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across, making 2 sc in each sc of 3-sc group (1 sc increased in each sc). Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each sc across, increasing 5 sc evenly across top of crown. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 5th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows alternately. Continue to work in this manner, increasing 4 sc evenly spaced around top of crown on every other row, until 24 rows in all have been completed. 25th to 29th rows incl: Work without increasing. 30th to 47th rows incl: Dec 1 sc at the beginning of each row—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Break off at end of last row.

Working across straight edge at back of crown with "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic and No. 6 hook, attach thread to end sc on 29th row of Crown, sc in same place, make 36 more sc across back, having last sc in first sc at opposite end of 29th row, make 18 sc along decreased edge, sc in each sc along last row of crown (front edge), make 18 sc along next decreased edge. Join with a sl st in first sc. Break off.

String beads onto "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic. When more beads are needed, break off thread at end of a row and add beads.

BRIM ... 1st row: Attach thread to center sc at back, ch 3, * half dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around, ending with half dc in same sc where thread was at­tached. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * Thread over hook, slide 1 bead down closely to hook, insert hook in next sp and complete a half dc, being careful to keep bead on right side of work, ch 1, half dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Half dc in first sp, * ch 1, half dc in next sp. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Half dc in first sp, * ch 1, slide a bead in place, make half dc in next sp, ch 1, half dc in next sp. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: Repeat 3rd row. Repeat 2nd to 5th rows incl until 15 rows have been completed. Repeat 3rd row 4 more times. Break off.

Fold Brim along the 15th row and stitch edge in place. Turn Brim back against crown and sew narrow edges at back of Brim to the crown.
