Sparkling Beaded Dutch Bag

Materials for both hat and bag:

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MER­CERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 3 balls of No. 12-A Blue Sparkle; and
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN" METALLIC, Art. A.64: 5 balls of No. M.68 Skipper Blue.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 2/0 (double zero) and No. 6.
14 strings of Walco round white wood beads, Style No. 7000 ... ¼ yard of blue felt ... 2 black snap fasteners ... ¾ yard cable cord ... 2 wooden tongue depressors.

GAUGE: 11 sc make 2 inches; 6 rows or rnds make 1 inch.

BAG ... Starting at center of base with "Speed-Cro- Sheen" and No. 2/0 hook, ch 18. 1st rnd: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, making 3 sc in last ch; now working along opposite side of starting chain, sc in each ch across, making sc in same ch where first 2 sc were made. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each of next 2 sc (2 sc increased), sc in each sc, making 2 sc in each sc of the 3-sc group at opposite end (3 sc increased), sc in each remaining sc, making 2 sc in last sc (another sc increased). 3rd and 4th rnds: Sc in each sc around, increasing 3 sc evenly spaced at both ends of base. 5th rnd: Sc in each sc around. 6th rnd: Sc in each sc around, increasing 5 sc evenly at both ends. 7th to 10th rnds incl: Repeat 5th and 6th rnds alternately 2 more times. Break off at end of 10th rnd (84 sc).

SIDE ... String beads onto "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic. 1st rnd: With No. 6 hook and right side of work facing, attach thread to first sc at one end of base, ch 3, * thread over hook, with a bead in place make a half dc in next sc, ch 1, half dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in 2nd ch of ch-3. Place a marker over the ch-3 and another marker over the 42nd half dc. 2nd rnd: Sl st in first sp, ch 3, * half dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join. 3rd rnd: Sl st in first sp, ch 3, * with a bead in place, make half dc in next sp, ch 1, half dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately, increasing 1 sp before and after each marker on every 7th rnd until 41 rnds have been completed—to inc 1 sp, make a half dc, ch 1 and half dc in 1 sp—being careful to keep continuity of pattern on uneven rnds. Now work without beads. 42nd rnd: 2 sc in first sp and in each sp around. 43rd, 44th and 45th rnds: Sc in each sc around. 46th rnd: Ch 3, dc in next sc and in each sc around. Join and break off.

HANDLE ... Using "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic and No. 6 hook, ch 12. Join with a sl st to form a ring. 1st rnd: Sc in each ch around. Now, working from inside with wrong side of work on outside, sc in each sc around until piece measures 24 inches. Break off.

Pull cable cord through handle. Cut off excess cord and sew up ends of handle. Cut a piece of cardboard to fit bottom. Cover with felt. Cover tongue depressors with felt. Line Bag with felt, sewing the covered depressors along top edge between the Bag and lining on both sides of Bag and having last rnd of Bag over­lap the top edge of the lining. Sew snap fasteners to inside of Bag at both ends of the depressors. Make a knotted loop of the handle and sew knot to center at top edge on one side of Bag. Sew ends in place at inside of top edge.
