This rug makes a splash of color with its hit or miss colored squares around a neutral center. The border is in black but may match the center if preferred.
Size pictured is approximately 33" x 51" but squares may be added to length or width. The center may be larger or made square.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Lily Sugar 'N Cream Art. 930 or Lily Cotton Yarn Art. 600 or Lily Rug Yarn Art. 241
6 balls or skeins Black,
5 balls or skeins each Brown and Dark Green
2 balls or skeins each of Yellow, Tea Rose, Med. Blue and Light Green
1 ball or skein each of White and Red.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.
With squares in solid colors, edged in Black or Ivory, placed as in a patchwork quilt, a ball each of 12 different shades, will make the 56 squares in the rug pictured. Place them helter-skelter throughout the rug in any pleasing combination, stitch together with yarn, matching the edges. The border of rug and edge of squares may be any pleasing shade, 4 balls will be needed. The center panel can be a single shade or two-tone as the "Hit and Miss" rug pictured, 4 balls each of 2 colors will make the center panel, or 7 balls of one color.
The instructions give the color arrangement for one square in the "hit or miss" colors. Each square should be different for as many color variations as possible, with each shade in a different position in each square, as in picture.
SQUARE—With Dk. Green, ch 27, sk 4 sts, dc in 13 sts, draw Tea Rose through last 2 loops of final dc, tie ends once, place starting end of Tea Rose and Green along top of previous row, work over to cover for 4 or 5 sts and cut close to work, dc in 10 sts. All colors are joined in same way. To start all following rows—ch 3, turn, sk last dc—then continue in dc—joining colors each time. ROW 2—17 sts Brown, 6 sts Yellow. ROW 3—11 sts Yellow, 12 sts Red. ROW 4—8 sts White, 15 sts Blue. ROW 5—11 sts Tea Rose, 12 sts Lt. Green. ROW 6—8 sts Black, 10 sts Brown, 5 sts Dk. Green. ROW 7—9 sts Dk. Green, 14 sts Yellow. ROW 8—10 sts Blue, 13 sts Red. ROW 9—17 sts Lt. Green, 6 sts Brown. ROW 10—14 sts Brown, 9 sts Tea Rose.
All squares should be the same size—and true squares—approx. 4⅜". Make all 56 squares and sew together before starting center panel. Stitch with Black through one loop of each st around squares, on wrong side. Edge lines should be kept true. Arrange squares so that rows are lengthwise in one—across the rug in next, as pictured.
EDGE—With Black work 3 sc in each corner st, 22 sc across each side. Fasten off.
CENTER PANEL:—Center panel when finished, including the sc border, should be the width of 3 blocks and length of 7. Measure width frequently as widening will cause rug to bulge. For panel 3 squares wide—with Brown, ch 78, 77 sc on ch. Join Dk. Green as in squares. If making larger rug, 26 ch to start, for each square added to width. ROW 2—Ch 1, turn, sc in last sc, (sc over next sc, inserting hook at base of sc—a long sc, sc in next sc) across, ending with sc. ROW 3—Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 alternating two rows of each color until panel is long enough—allow for the edge row of Black. EDGE—With Black, sc in each st around panel, 3 sc in each corner st. Fasten off. With Black, sew squares to center panel on wrong side. BORDER—With Black, work one or more rows of sc around rug, sc in st, 3 sc in each corner st. Fasten off.
