adaptable to any headsize

MATERIALS:
Choose one of the following threads in size 30:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 6 balls of White or Ecru, or 9 balls of any color.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 5 balls of White or Ecru, or 6 balls of any color.
J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls of White or Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8 or 9.
1½ yds. grosgrain ribbon, 1½ inches wide, of a contrasting color.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

Use thread double. Start at lower edge with a 25-inch chain (8 sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, draw loop through; * insert hook in next ch, draw loop through; thread over, draw through all 3 loops; insert hook in same ch, draw loop through. Repeat from * until row measures 21½ in. or desired headsize, s c in same ch as last st. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Insert hook in 1st st (s c), draw loop through; * insert hook in next st, draw loop through; thread over, draw through all 3 loops; insert hook in same st, draw loop through. Repeat from * across; s c in same place as last st. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for 4 inches. Next row: Skip 1st s c (a decrease), insert hook in next pattern st and work to within last pattern st; omit last pattern st and make s c in next st (another decrease). Ch 1, turn. Repeat this row for 3½ inches more. Fasten off.

   Block piece. Sew a ¾-inch tuck, ¾ inch up from lower edge. Sew short straight ends together (center front). Cut ribbon in half and paste together with rubber cement; sew one end under tuck at center back. Put hat on; bring ribbon up and over crown to center front, and sew. Cut off remaining ribbon and make a bow. Tack edges of ribbon to hat; sew bow in place.
