MATERIALS:
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 7 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6.
Chiffon, three ⅛-yd. strips in contrasting colors.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 12 rnds make 1 inch.

Starting at tip of crown, ch 2 and make 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around (8 s c increased). 3rd rnd: S c in 1st s c; insert hook at base of next s c and finish as for an s c (a long s c). * S c in next s c, long s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: S c in each s c, increasing if necessary to keep work flat. The last 2 rnds constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately, increasing when necessary on the s c-rnd to keep work flat, until piece measures 3 inches in diameter. Work 12 rnds without increasing. Continue in pattern, increasing 2 s c at equal distances apart on 13th rnd—to increase on pattern rnd, make 2 s c in 1 s c, being sure to keep in pattern around; on the following rnd, make increases directly above those of previous rnd—3 s c on 15th rnd, 4 s c on 16th rnd, 5 s c on 17th rnd, and 6 s c on each of next 6 rnds. 24th to 49th rnds incl: Work without increasing. Then inc. 4 s c on 50th and 51st rnds; 6 s c on 52nd and 53rd rnds; 8 s c on 54th and 55th rnds; and 10 s c on 56th, 58th, 59th and 6lst rnds. Piece should measure 21½ inches in circumference, for 21½-inch headsize. For a larger headsize, add a few more increase-rnds. 62nd to 78th rnds incl: Work without increasing. Ch 1 to turn at end of last rnd. Do not break off, but work brim as follows:

Brim1st rnd: S c in each s c around, increasing 10 s c at equal distances apart. 2nd rnd: Work in pattern without increasing. 3rd to 13th rnds incl: Work in pattern around, increasing 10 s c on each rnd. Now continue without increasing until brim measures 2 inches. Fasten off.

Finishing … Tuck in top of crown to depth of ½ inch. Steam hat thoroughly, shaping in the hands until an even surface is achieved. Wet brim and turn up. Allow to dry thoroughly. Roll raw edges of chiffon. Braid enough to go around crown of hat. Join at side, and allow ends to fall over edge of brim.
